What's most important to YOU?

I wanted to get peoples opinions on what concerns them the most in this world being that there is so many shitty things on this planet that we could fix. It could be guns, aids, cancer, hunger, corruption, poaching, hate, cars, racism, whatever. the list goes on and on.
me personally, if i could fix one thing, it would be the drug war. let's quit making regular people criminals, let's give liberty back to the people, and let's keep people in prison who deserve to be there and not kick them out to make room for drug offenders.

so what's most important to you? what one thing would you change or fix if you had the power? hint...there is no wrong answer..
if you think what I believe is stupid, bizarre, ridiculous or outrageous.....it's ok, I think I had a brain tumor when I wrote that.

    Wow, great question.

I would say gun violence. I'm tired of hearing about dozens of people (or even 1) being killed for no purpose whatsoever.

Of course, that's just my #1 thing right now, it is always changing.

I'm going to think about this more and probably come back and change my mind.

Maybe I'm easy to please, but I'd be happy to start with simple day-to-day courtesies.

True consideration of others, and more openmindedness - a willingness to listen without assumed agendas.

So much could come from that.

I think education is the most important thing. Education allows people to rise above tough circumstances and enables people to become successful, contributing members of society. I also think education is the key to population control and equality for women. In areas of the world where women are considered second class citizens, education allows these women to participate in the economy and the political process within their country which ensures that they are aware of birth control methods and gives them options about leaving men that are abusive.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

I agree... the first thing that popped into my mind when reading the OP was "respect". If people respected other people and you know, the whole golden rule thing about treating people like you'd want to be treated, a lot of these other issues would go away.

What's most important to me personally in terms of change is for people to show more kindness. We can do better that way, I can do better that way.

What I consider to be most important to the world we live on and our ability to go on living here is climate change and a healthy environment. In a world that lacks a suitable environment for our existence, no social, ethical, philosophical or political issues will be relevant or even exist.

    tough question.
Maybe greed. Because with greed, comes corruption.

But I also think world hunger is the saddest suffering around. And maybe the lack of water in some places. I cant even imagine how many things we take for granted that other people consider gold.

What's most important to me is to stop hate, stop bullying, stop meanness
and replace it with the golden rule, understanding and kindness
as an everyday goal for everyone on Earth.

tough to pick the most important especially when so many things are interconnected ... think i will go with riotgirl here and say education ... i feel that education or in some respects combating ignorance would cause significant social change ...

right now i believe much of the world's ails are purposeful and that there are entities that gain from these problems ... it's much harder to get away with all that stuff when people are more knowledgeable ...

So would I. I believe sound education will have impact on most of our worries/concerns/lives. Not just 'school' type education but also the will for one to 'educate' one's self (and act upon this will!) in matters that concern us, as humans. All the 'hot topics' - environment, health, famine, drought, climate change, drugs, health, etc. Only if we are educated/informed can we tackle all these issues and make changes for the best.

Tolerance, respect, empathy, everything that's the opposite of hate. We've got to stop the hate and intolerance. I'm into disability awareness but we can't even get to that point without getting past the overall disrespect for each other to begin with.

Tack me onto the education train too. Our kids are our future yet the public education is so bad right now and just getting worse with the reduction of state aid (at least in my state) and programs.

So what's most important to you? My Family
What one thing would you change or fix if you had the power? Personal Responsibility. Nothing angers me more than having to dish out money/time that I earn to people/systems that rewards bad behaviour.
Our government should be using positive reinforcement and rewarding people who are responsible with both their lives and community.
Bad behaviour/decisions should be disincentivize, not the other way around.
The ammount of breaks/support that lower income people get from the gov. is disgusting and perpetuating laziness and entitlement. And I am not only talking about welfare, I am talking a basic public school (where wife works) that is considered low income.
The school/gov. is now responsible for feeding 80% of the school 2 meals a day, with weekend "power packs" which is basically multiple bagged lunches to bring home with them since their parents won't feed them during the weekend.

The environment. I wish governments and citizens alike would go hard core and make REAL sacrifices for the sake of the environment. Total pipe dreams though.

More locally, I'm just really concerned about the skyrocketing, out of control cost of living where I live, especially when it comes to housing prices. It's foreign property ownership that is doing that for the most part, so I wish that the government would create laws to prevent foreign home ownership. Another pipe dream.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
  • The most important thing for me is my own happiness. It comes in the form of many things. Some are material and some are spiritual. I have said before that if I had access to a method that would destroy all mankind like a virus or bacteria I would unleash it. But now I'm more at peace with the way things are. In the grand scheme of things I just don't feel we are that important to even worry about.
