Dave Matthews's popularity

People (especially on here) can say what they want about his music but his fan base is probably equal (or bigger) to Pearl Jam's fan base. The Life is Good festival is in it's three year existence and I have been to the first two and am going this Sunday. The first two had Ben Harper and Ray Lamontagne on Sunday and The Avett Brothers and Jason Mraz on Saturday. Both those years offered half price tickets two weeks before in an effort to sell more tickets. This year Dave and Tim Reynolds not only sold out Sunday but also sold out the two day tickets (you can still buy Michael Franti for one day Saturday). My reason for this post is my friend who is not a big Dave fan (but loves PJ) tried his luck for half price tickets and just texted me that now they are $225 on stub hub. I wonder if Eddie solo would sell out the festival?

  • From what I understand, he doesn't have much of a presence internationally. I don't intend this as a mark against the guy, just saying PJ is a worldwide band.

Don't get me wrong I am a bigger Pearl Jam fan. I am actually going to the festival more for the Fresh Beat Band as I have a 6 yo and a 3yo. I was just shocked to see it sell out. I don't even know how DMB tests internationally as they really only do US shows but my buddy just got back from three days at the Gorge and he said the place was packed with people from all over the world. Ironically Dave wasn't even born in the US and is originally from South Africa. All I know is his fan base in the US is pretty big.

  • Although it's been a while, I've been to a few DMB shows and they have all been great. Of course, live performances are much better then the studio recordings.

Keep in mind, they just released a new album last week. I would assume that has an impact on ticket sales.
. . . the in between is mine.

Yeah, I forgot about the new album. My same friend who went to the Gorge burned me a copy. Much better that the last album as they used Steve Lillywhite again. I am sure the new album didn't hurt but this the festival isn't even the full band.

I think the combination of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds is fantastic. I can see why they'd sell the tickets.

I prefer Dave Matthews with Tim Reynolds rather than with DMB.

I'm a huge DMB fan. I of course prefer PJ but have seen both bands countless times. DMB is a great live band and I catch them every time they come through my area, I even went to the Caravan they had in Chicago last year, all 3 days of it. It was packed and they really did a great job of putting that festival on. That being said, I prefer PJ concerts - probably because I'm a bigger fan of their music and I have many more relationships in this area. If that makes sense, ha! PJ20 was one of the best weekends I've ever had - better than the Caravan mainly because of the people I met. I went to Alpine this summer to see Dave and while it was fun, I felt myself wishing it was PJ. I've never seen a Dave & Tim show but I would love to, the boots are amazing!

So those are my 2 cents
