Class reunion letter lists 'white graduates only' party

Graduates from the St. Martinville, La., Senior High School Class of 1973 decided that after nearly 40 years, they would stop holding segregated class reunions, but a letter announcing the change included an after party for "white graduates only."

Michael Kreamer, who is the principal of the Louisiana school, said the letter was brought to his attention on Friday morning.

"It's disappointing to see something like this," he said. "The school was really not involved at all in it."

On Sept. 21, a reception will be held at the school, followed by the homecoming football game, which the letter notes all graduates are welcome to attend.

After the game, "white graduates only" are invited to a classmate's home and are encouraged to bring a "food dish to share."

Liza Chance, one of the organizers of the event, told ABC affiliate KATC the group had originally planned to have separate parties again this year, but then changed their minds, and that the old plans were sent prematurely.

"I don't understand why this went the way it did," she said.

so whats the issue here now? Finally after 40 years they decide on all inclusive reunion and a letter is mistakenly sent out with the old way of doing things for this class? At a INDIVIDUALS home?

I wonder when the school was integrated? 1973 would be near the end of the segregated era....that doesn't forgive this bad behavior, but it may help explain some of it.

I wonder if any white people from that school married someone who isn't white in the last 40 years? And if so, are they allowed to bring their date to the potluck? And if so, do they bring one or two dishes?

If the invitation went out to invitees okay, no prob. It's just your regular everyday redneck party. But it was on the class reunion letter that was sent to everyone, and also as representation of the school when the decision had been made to DEsegregate. A segregation party on a letter about desegregation? Seems inappropriate to me. These facts are what create the issue. No one's saying it's illegal or anything... it's just fucking shitty.

It shocks the hell out of me that issues like this, and segregation of graduating classes and shit, is still going on in America, a country that likes to spout that it's progressive and "the greatest country in the world." Uhhhhh... yeah, I don't think so. This kind of news tid bit always surprises me. And there seem to be an awful lot of them.

well, I'm guessing it wasnt sent out on purpose after having been decided otherwise. Its obvious that the decision was made for inclusive party after this letter was printed up. Further for all these years , I assume, there was a "black" only party held.

Yeah, of course. But that wasn't on the flyer. Plus, black people really aren't the root of the problem in such matters. They would have black only parties because they have been victims of racism for generations. White people have white-only parties because they are racists (I mean the ones in question obviously).
