Early Pearl Jam T-Shirt - 'Don't Give Up'

Does anyone know the symbolism behind this shirt? It was an early Pearl Jam T-Shirt with two red interlocking circles with the words 'Don't Give Up' printed below the circles. I got into Pearl Jam in my late teens back in 91 and it was a particularly difficult period in my life and this shirt always resonated with me for the obvious reason of the words Don't Give Up, but I have never really understood the symbolism of the two red interlocking circles.

    Great shirt, wore it for a decade, the circles make sense somehow but it would be cool to know more, and have this one redone.
