  • And the American people wake up to realize that they have been "had."

Oh they all jumped up and down with their indignation about "Government Regulation" and how it was ruining "Free Enterprise" and "crippling the American Dream." That's when the American Dream involved living well and having a high quality of life. Now the American Dream is to barely scrape by.

Now we see that it really was just all about letting banks, mortgage companies, stock brokers and lending firms screw you out of your money any way they could. Lie to you and take your money, fool you into buying a house they knew you couldn't afford, manipulating the interest rates to scam the public of trillions of dolalrs... bet against you and walk home with money while they leave you homeless.

The Billionaires were awarded massive tax cuts that we couldn't afford because they were "job creators." Of course.. they didn't create any jobs. Not in America, anyway. Mitt Romney sent the jobs overseas and then hid his billions in foreign bank accounts so he didn't have to pay taxes.

Deregulation was about letting companies like Walmart rewrite laws to make billions while making tax payers foot the bill for their employees health insurance and food stamps (yes, Walmart makes billions of dollars yearly but many of their employees are on food stamps).

And now Airlines can sell you a plane ticket, charge you as much as they want for every piece of luggage, charge you to have a drink of water, jack up the air conditioning and charge you $10 for a blanket that isn't big enough to do anything but cover your lap...

This is where the conservative mantra of "Deregulation" has brought us. The Corporations make billions in profit, the employees live in near poverty and the people are distracted by things like marriage equality and arguing about what Planned Parenthood really does. And we aren't able to really know what's going on because the major news agencies are run by a handful of people. 90% of the news that we have access is run by a tiny group of self-interested billionaires.

And if you think you can change things... you can't. The Billionaires aren't going to let that happen and shovel hundreds of millions of dollars into electing politicians who will do whatever the highest bidder told them to do. Thanks, Citizen's United.

    God Bless America.

A profit of $39,000 per employee, $4.9 billion in profit last year and they want to freeze wages for 6 years.

    Screw corporate America.

I definitely agree with the theme of your post... corporate cronyism is probably the biggest challenge we face today. Anything from defense contractors to ridiculous subsidies and tax loopholes. The problem is, nobody is going to let these issues inconvenience their lifestyle. Almost nobody is going to stop buying iphones, or shopping at walmart or even driving instead of flying. We have voted(or not voted) into this situation by not holding politicians accountable for bending over for corporations. Then we turn around and complain about prices, but won't actually give up buying the product. The bottom line is, if people are still buying the product, then the product isn't overpriced. Americans want domestic jobs, low prices and what they deem as fair wages ... but they don't want to actually hold the corporation accountable. They want the government to do that, but the problem is, the corporation has a much bigger bank account. The president gets all the blame, while the legislature skates right on by.

But as you said, we can't change it. As bleak as that sounds, I agree 100%.

I for one do not believe were all as helpless and herded as you sadly think we are. We all have a ton of choices....many more choices than someone born dirt poor in a third world country with no means of escape or betterment.

seems logical to me. you dont want to be ripped off by the airlines.. dont fly. unless youre flying overseas there are alternatives... and even then there are ships.. tho the price might be prohibitive.

Not at all. What if everyone basically stopped flying. Where would those fees go?

Airlines hedge their fuel prices, so while the prices may have dropped, they may still be paying a higher price now than the actual market price.

United made $5,200M from extra fees while posting $840M in net profits in 2011. The extra fees were their profit margin and without them they would have posted a loss of $4,360M.

I would imagine that their 86,852 direct employees are happy with the extra fees. I would imagine that the employees of Boeing and Airbus are happy with the extra fees. Along with most major airport hubs in the world.

And the beautiful part is that if you don't like all the extra fees, companies like Southwest and Jet Blue are options.

    H. E. Pennypacker is out to get you and uses the gov't to do it. But instead of eliminating the ability of the gov't to do their bidding, we want to make them more powerful so that the people who own Pennypacker can finally take more of the profits they have worked so hard to steal.

I think people forgot that Airlines are constantly operating in the red. These fees help them, In the whole scheme of things, airline travel isn't a right and a company that can provide the service can do it how they want to...someone usually will be there to fill the necessary void.
