WEST MONROE, Louisiana - At a campaign stop at a firing range, while Rick Santorum was firing off some rounds, a woman shouted, "pretend it's Obama."

Santorum, who was far from the woman, couldn't hear the comment as he proceeded with his target practice. Neither could his staffers.

But the yell - the identity of the yeller is not clear, although the words were clearly audible - was in close proximity to journalists traveling with the candidate.

"It's absurd," Santorum said of the woman's outburst when reporters told him about it. "No we're not pretending it's anybody but shooting pistols. It's a very terrible and horrible remark and I'm glad I didn't hear it."

Santorum is expected to easily win the Louisiana primary on Saturday, but his chances of wresting front runner status from Mitt Romney have dwindled as Romney has built a strong delegate lead.

Perhaps sensing Romney's proximity to clinching the nomination, Santorum has sharpened verbal attacks on the former Massachusetts governor, suggesting he is too moderate for Republican voters and could not beat President Obama.

Santorum sought in a written statement to clarify today that he did not mean he vote against Romney if Romney is the nominee in November.

"I would never vote for Barack Obama over any Republican and to suggest otherwise is preposterous," he wrote. "I was simply making the point that there is a huge enthusiasm gap around Mitt Romney and it's easy to see why - Romney has sided with Obama on healthcare mandates, cap-and-trade, and the Wall Street bailouts. Voters have to be excited enough to actually go vote, and my campaign's movement to restore freedom is exciting this nation. If this election is about Obama versus the Obama-Lite candidate, we have a tough time rallying this nation."

Some people really are stupid. You know that woman was probably thinking she'd get a big laugh or a thumbs up from Santorum when she said that.

at least santorum condemned it...i gotta give him props for that....gingrich would not have, and with the shit romney has pulled the last year or so i do not think he would have either...

sadly, these are the kind of people that republican candidates have to pander to...and in my opinion, pandering to people like this has been the great undoing of the gop.

Santorum was shooting a Colt 45 and emptying two magazines into a circular target, not a human-shaped one.

He thanked the range master, who complimented his shooting, for a chance “to get those juices flowing in the morning” and told the crowd, “What I was able to exercise was one of those fundamental freedoms that’s guaranteed in our Constitution, the right to bear arms.”

I won't say that I'm very white or Republican . It's unnecessary. I was talking to an ethnic guy last night. He asked me "how much would you give to give the bullet for OBAMA's death?" I think he's nuts. Why would anyone kill the President , it's insane. Obama is! Bush Was. Clinton did. I just don't want a king or queen for my country.

As U.S.A. we can vote them out. Killing is stoopid.

I did not vote for Obama, but I do not wish he should DIE? that's crazy.

You gotta be a real nobody to get a hard on from fantasizing about someone else's death. I'm pretty upbeat, optimistic ...... But the longer I inhabit this earth, the more I think the overwhelming majority of people are so beyond "fucked" in the head it's mind boggling. The handful of truly good people you encounter are a blessing, cherish them.

So many blood thirsty a**holes out there.

After reading the article, this was my thought as well.

The other thing that comes to mind for me is- Santorum must know that many Americans have serious issues with hand gun and the fact that he would seemingly ignore that says something about who he is. I'm not saying that shooting at a target is something he should or shouldn't do in his personal life, but on a campaign trail- well, that says a lot to me... but then obviously he was never going to get my vote anyway.
