Present day Pearl Jam is much better than early 2000's

Ok first off saying I'm a big fan dosn't provide enough....So I'm not trying to nitpick

So I received Showbox (From 2002) and Touring Band (2000) I believe, and it's almost like Eddie has no passion in his performances compared to 03 -present day. Correct me if I'm wrong but in those shows he almost seems as if he's in some sort of trance. Fast forward to my first show in Buffalo in 03 and they were amazing. Perhaps it's just the low quality of the DVD's???

The band's energy now is off the chart...In his water on the road performance you can feel the emotion.

Just my two cents..PJ is amazing just wanted to see if anyone else shared the same thoughts about the band in the early 2000's.

I agree to a certain degree, but there's a real intensity to the 2000 shows (Europe & US) which I don't think they ever matched since

You probably have to bear in mind what was happening with the band in the early 2000's. Touring Band was off the back off Roskilde and Showbox after 9/11.

Having listened to a lot of 2000 shows recently he does seem almost still to be the shy frontman when talking to the crowd and in 2003 he doesn't. But performance-wise, there is no doubting the 2000 tour was amazing.

I know in 2000 his brother was in Indy and he had a lot of energy that night.

They did Throw Your Arms Around Me and it was awesome.

You are completely nuts. In the live arena, their best was 2000, then 2003 then its all down from there

I think the 2000 boots are "boring", but maybe that is cuz of the setlists. Enjoy 2003 the most.

That'll be because of Riot Act ;)

It's hit or miss, but I agree, Ed was toned down in the 2000 to 2003 period. Boots I once loved pale in comparison to the 2005+ shows I have. Ed just seems a lot happier now, less shy and more energetic. He doesn't mumble his way through songs like he did then. The current shows are much funner.

    ?????

Take a look at Chicago. Katowice 2. Seattle 2. Seattle 1. I think any one of those setlists in present day, and everybody in attendance would shit themselves.

how about the war tag on daughter from showbox? that was pretty intense. all of the early shows had an intensity that has been pretty hard to match as well. i agree with a couple of other posts, though. they (especially ed) seem happier these days. maybe the kids changed their perspectives somewhat? i totally disagree with the 2000 & 2003 shows being boring. they've never been a boring band.focused, yes. it seemed like they were down in va beach, but once i found out why- i understood it. all 3 shows they've done in that venue are amazing. 9-7-98, 8-3-00,6-22-08. i wish i would've made it to the last one. it was a day after my birthday & he gave a shout out to the 2000 crowd. damn work. damn bills. oh well. i do think that they get tighter every year, though. the way some of the songs have changed ever so slightly.example-rival from philly 09, no way, but yeah, they have loosened up a bit. like an old zeppelin fanzine was called- tight but loose- oops va beach 08 was the 17th & D.C. was the 22nd..

I have all of those boots. Chicago was my second show I've been too. It was the most memorable experience, but the energy is not there in comparison.

Same buddy I went to Chicago 2000 with went to Chicago '09 with me and we were blown away by the energy in '09... '06 was better than 2000 too... Ed had a cold for the '03 show.

I'll always remember 2000 for being my first indoor show (The Ice Bowl was my first show).. but there have been better Chicago shows.

Agree. Nowadays the concert is like a big party. Full energy and optimistic

Musically Eddie is lack of air when he sings comparing with early days
2000's and 2003's have slowly tempos in some songs

finally if you can hear some 1995's concerts you can be aware that the ambient was less optimistic, less happy ... There is some kind of different catarsis, deepest feeling, rage

I hate betterman karaoke, and daughter tag feedback (i prefer the stuff and nonsense tag)

Ed is so out of breath these days even though he can still hit notes its waaaay more of a struggle even when he does.

Matt's drum sound sucks now compared to 2000, plus his playing back then is just exceptional, and is amplified by the Ayotte.

The songs all arn't played at 9999 bpm

    list goes on

I'm the other way around. I love 2000, especially Europe and the latter half of US leg 2. I'm not the biggest fan of a huge bulk of the 2003 shows largely due the political edge of Ed's onstage talk. I'm not interested in politics enough to want to hear what I already know from the press at a rock concert. That's not to say there weren't some amazing shows and I do love hearing the Riot Act songs which I think should still get played more. The 2003 boots were brilliantly recorded and mixed but as a tour it was overshadowed by the war on terror for my liking. 1994 - 2000 is my favourite period but they are still awesome live.

I'd take Pearl Jam now I think. There are plusses and minus, but I think overall Ed is a better singer now. He doesn't have the range, but he is better.

I can't listen to Benaroya Hall's show anymore because Ed's delivery is so boring then compared to how he sings now. His whole delivery on Riot Act was toned down. His solo tour was one of the best things to happen to this band. He became a better performer because of it.

Just listen to how he sings Man of the Hour and Around the Bend now versus 2003. So much better.
