God this is a tough one for me (not the last two albums, fuck those)
because Ritual & Nothing's rival each other in so many ways.
Sure, Ritual has "Three Days", but Nothing's has "Summertime Rolls"

However, based on Up The Beach & Ocean Size, i think I have to give the nod to Nothing's Shocking.

That being said,

1. XXX \ ST \ "live" @ the roxy
2. Nothing's Shocking
3. Ritual De Lo Habitual
4. Good Gods // Urge :D:D:D
5. the other crap
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

  • Good thread to start.

    1. Ritual
    2. Shocking
    3. S/T
    4. Strays
    5. Great Escape Artist

There's a big gap between the 1st 3 and Strays. And then an even bigger gap between Strays and TGEA (horrible album IMO). Ritual and Shocking are neck and neck. Barely gave the nod to Ritual.

This is probably my order too. Strays and Great Escape Artist are way under the others.

Strays has a few outstanding songs. Maybe I need to give Escape a few more listens...but nothing stands out yet.

    Damn.
You just put a Compilation (Kettle Whistle) ahead of XXX?

    :( :( :(

    I cry.
    What about:
    MY TIME
    Whores
    1%
    > than album Pigs In Zen
    >than album Jane Says
    ???
    :( :( :(

Not knockin you. just wonderin' on what account it gets the nod?
Although, that "album" kind've pissed me off when it came out,
literally the only unheard items on it were Maceo and So What.
EVERYTHING else was either released as a b-side, on Live & Rare, or was previously available on relatively common bootlegs. (or in one case, from the Soul Kiss, video) :(

PS. My girl FORCED me to get tickets and take her to see Jane's at Irving Plaza in NYC last month, and it was AWESOME. No suprises, hardly anything new (i think two songs), and not "classic Janes" (no eric) but loud, raunchy, and MOSHING galore. :D

I love the self titled album. It's so raw and dirty. Putting it at #4 is not a knock at all. On some days it could be #2 or 3.

  • Heh. Finally, another one of these I can post in. Maybe cus, considering the number of years they've been around (sort of), they don't have that big of a new material catalog - it's easy to have heard the whole thing.

    Anyway, I'll go with:

    Ritual
    Nothing Shocking
    S/T
    Strays
    Great Escape Artist

I like the new record okay - don't hate it or anything. But it's not in the same category as some of the earlier stuff.....

    I'll be honest.
I would consider myself a HUGE jane's fan.
I liked them before i fell in love with PJ.
But when Strays came out, i didn't go anywhere near it.
The only reason i have heard any songs off of it is because my best friend thinks it is their "best album".
I STILL haven't heard all the songs off it, and I will probably never find the will to sit through GEA. The few tracks i played over grooveshark was enough for me.

I know there are at least SOME other Jane's fans who feel the same way, I used to work with one around the time Strays came out. And we both would joke about how there was no need to give it a listen.

I don't consider myself some sort of elitist prick for having that mindset, it just doesn't feel the same. So I don't bother. I know on some level the band must feel the same way themselves, because I've seen them twice since Strays came out (once about a month ago, the day before GEA released) and they played, between the two shows, TWO new songs total. (yeah, the show i saw in Charlotte a couple years ago, they didn't play ANY new material) ... so I can't be too far off the mark.
    :D or :(

I am a huge Jane's fan. I gave Strays an honest listen when it came out. I wanted to love it. And while there are a few duds, I think there are some great songs. "True Nature" and "Price I Pay" and "To Match The Sun" are freaking incredible.

I've given TGEA a try and I just don't hear anything that stands out. Of course I will try a few more times. Maybe I am expecting too much, or I don't quite know how to swallow it. Time will tell.

Jane's has earned my respect as someone who will always give them a try.

Many of you have listed releases by Jane's Addiction that I didn't even know existed.

I was only aware of the following albums:

XXX & S/T, are these unofficial releases?
    7/2/06 - Denver, CO
    6/12/08 - Tampa, FL
    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
9/28/09 - Salt Lake City, UT (11 years too long!!!)
    9/03/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 1

Still don't get it. Farrell? even tried to reach out to me and I ducked. It's a funny picture. He has to use this vocal processer on every song. To me that is kinda cheating. I don't get the live shows? Sexy chicks walking around.. fun. that dave guy is smoking a cigarette. Perry can be entertaining as a person , but his bands are only good in the studio it seems. Well that is why I love pj always good. :D

Yes. You are missing out on some of their best work (and two more than decent covers - Rock n Roll - velvet underground - is killer) ... Whores, 1%, My Time, Would For You, some of the best songs they ever did.

    Hahaha! I get it!
    No i dont.
    What?
    ahh.
    :(

    "Vocal processor" on every song?
    You mean, DELAY?
That's not cheating, thats just adding some reverb.
He sure didn't sound like it was "processed" in NYC last month.

    not good live?
    Not Good Live?

Yeah...he doesn't really use any vocal processors. Just a lot of delay in some songs. I love it.

    Ritual
    Nothing's Shocking
    S/T
    Kettle Whistle
    Strays
    GEA

I have to give Ritual the nod for "side 2" (hey, I bought it on cassette!)....but...if it's a sunny summer day, NS wins every time. Nothing beats a daytime buzz, listening to Sumertime Rolls...

If Avery and Perry could have put their differences aside and kept going.....imagine the music they could have made! The two full length albums produced by the original lineup stand up to any record in rock history, IMO.
Haven't listened to GEA in it's entirety yet, but I'm not overly impressed with what I've heard...Strays is meh at best. True Nature is the only song I love.
Saw them for the first time this summer....great show, but WAY, WAY too short. Granted, it was a festival...but they headlined, coulda played longer.

I like those songs too. And Superhero as well. Superhero sort of reminds me of Been Caught Stealing, which is one of my favorite Jane's songs. :D

Strays is an okay album - I don't have a problem with it really (although I do agree that there are 'a couple of duds')...but I don't have a problem with anyone disliking it either. It's not the same as, say, Ritual, for sure.
I've given TGEA a try and I just don't hear anything that stands out. Of course I will try a few more times. Maybe I am expecting too much, or I don't quite know how to swallow it. Time will tell.

That's sort of the way I feel about Jane's. They earned my respect a long time ago, and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I purchased TGEA a couple of weeks ago and have only listened to it once - I'm not really ready to pass my 'final' judgement - I won't do that for several months & several listens. Right now, it's in the 'okay' category.

Just wanna chime in again and say that in my personal opinion, Jane's Addiction is one of the best live bands of the past 25 years.

I saw them in 2003 supporting their album Strays and they still melted faces. I can only imagine what it would've been like seeing them in the L.A. circuit in the early days.

    +1000
I was floored a few years ago when I first heard Jeff say in an interview that Green River opening for Jane's back in the day, and sitting side stage and seeing the amazing showmanship of Perry was essentially singular inspiration for wanting to have a great band.
    bravo.

Gotta say...I'm a little jealous of your ignorance, dc :D.....I would LOVE to be able to discover that album all over again :)
And I say ignorance in the most friendly way possible...I actually wasn't aware of the S/T album until well after Ritual came out, myself. It was pretty much never stocked in any of the music stores I used to frequent, and without the internet, discovering a bands' back catalogue wasn't exactly an easy process. I remember seeing a poster of the album cover at a bar, and commenting about it to a friend, who enlightened me as to what it was....spent a couple weeks trying to track the thing down after that....
  • ^ Well, in fairness, Jane's has a pretty scatty catalog in any event. IMO one of the most piecemeal catalogs around, given their on-again/off-again longevity.
