Radiohead - I'm a little late to the party

I owned a few of their CDs for a while, but just started to really listen to them. They seem to be the newest version of Grateful Dead (high pitched voice, stoner music, makes me want to look at lava lamps, and twirl twirl twirl in a twirly skirt.)

Am I off the mark, or have others found that the two bands hold *similar* appeal.

They prolly have quite a few of the same fans, but I don't think you're gonna like one b/c of the other. I don't really get a musical connection, though my experience with the Dead is pretty limited.

Don't think they could be called the newest GD with bands like Phish, moe. or even Wilco around.

On the contrary, while I love both bands, I personally don't see much in common between the two. The Grateful Dead produce very happy-go-lucky music that seems to promote just 'loving life' and not worrying too much, whereas Radiohead screams of political discontent and a world full of people who fail at loving people. Maybe that's a bit of a cynical interpretation, but I hear themes of isolation, misery, loneliness, and an outsider's look at the collective population's necessity for uniformity.

The sound is what threw me. You're right though. Also I think GD actually told stories better. I was looking at the lyrics for The Bends this morning, and I couldn't figure them out.

    Brilliant.

I have not a whole lot of GD knowledge, and don't really "get" it. But I understand that many people don't "get" Radiohead.

Although, I don't know what there is to not "get" about this song (Electioneering):

  • I've never made a Dead - Radiohead connection, but I LOVE Radiohead. Amazingly talented and cerebral band who have evolved over the years.

I love the Dead too, but I kinda put them on different wavelengths.

Amazing band, when in the mood it is awesome. I still need to see Radiohead live, I bet that is mindblowing! Last time they toured the states, my sister's graduation from college was the same day in Austin.

    Rico,
They are honestly a band you have to be in the mood to listen to. When the mood strikes, their music is Amazing. I'm the same way with Sonic youth. Great band, but just have to be in the certain mood to embrace the greatness of their music.

Yep, it's one of those rare perfect albums. I even like Fitter Happier. I consider it the 3rd best album of the 90s, behind U2's "Achtung Baby" at #1 and TEN at #2. All my opinion.

Also, it's a beauty on vinyl, especially "Subterranean Homesick Alien".

I fell in love with Radiohead a few years ago (and bought all their music) but I haven't been listening to them lately.

Around the time "In Rainbows" was released, I was intrigued by why they were so popular.

So, over the course of a week, I worked my way through their first 4-5 albums.

"The Bends" is fantastic...as it "OK Computer".

    I became a fan.

Have you seen this fan mash-up of "Paranoid Android"?

That was awesome! Radiohead should be humbled by the fan devotion expressed in that video. So cool!

That sounds about right. I could switch those 3 around at any time. Also R.E.M. Automatic for the People in the Top 5.

I love the youtube of the robot "singing" Fitter Happier and talking to the other robot.
