MATT LUKIN TELLS THE STORY BEHIND THE PEARL JAM SONG “LUKIN”

This is from grungebook.tumblr.com

“Vedder had a stalker chick that would come by his house that was freaking him out. He would start to avoid his house after a while, so he would just come by my place. Vedder’d come over and we’d sit ‘round the kitchen and drink and stuff. He would talk about his stalker problem a little bit, but I would just blow it off. It was just drunken talk, throwing darts, having fun. There’d be other people there, sometimes four or five of us. Just me and Eddie and our wives and mutual friends like [then Mudhoney manager] Bob Whittaker. The Pearl Jam song ‘Lukin’ is about how my kitchen’s a sanctuary for him. Also, I was giving him shit about all their songs being too long. That inspired him to make ‘Lukin’ a one-minute song. I’ve always flipped him shit. Never let him be the rock star that he is.”

—former Mudhoney/Melvins bassist Matt Lukin (outtake from the forthcoming book Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge)

Yeah, I think there are errors on the PJ site... or the lyrics don't make sense.

"Knock the door at Lukin's, open the fridge, now I know life his way" makes sense, and that seems to be what he's singing when you hear the lyrics in a quieter setting too.

I always thought it was worth...and meaning now that he is relaxed at Lukin house he sees that life is worth living. Not sure when dealing with psycho chick.

Half the time I feel like Ed is just screaming gibberish into the microphone when he sings Lukin. I love hearing it live, gives me the giggles

    This is my favourite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDQ4hQ5S ... ure=fvwrel

Love the look on Mike's face the whole time, then the burst of laughter at the end.

For some reason this link can't be shown for European viewers. is there also another link? Or concert date? Would love to see this one...

And for a non-native speaker, could someone explain to me how "I know life is way" (or something like that), makes more sense than the original lyrics?

It's off the Immagine in a Cornice DVD so you may have seen it already. I want to say it's Verona, Mike and Ed were just walking around the top row of the concert venue, and old outdoor arena, and sat down to jam on their acoustic guitars.

Aaahhhh, I know that one... I will put my DVD on in a second. I never listened to the lyrics to be honest in this version. I'm quite curious now.

It's "Now I know life his way" according to some of us here. But I believe it's "Now I know life is worth".

Listen to the Benny Hall version from 03. That version is about 99% right, but I think it's still messed up...not entirely sure though.

(The Benny Hall starts with "walk down", but it appears to mostly match the one found at www.lukin.com )

    It's "life is worth."

Pretty sure it says so in Ed's own handwriting in the No Code liner notes. Although I can't for the life of me locate my copy ... which has started an all-out search at my house.

Ok, but what does "now I know life his way" mean. I am no grammer teacher, not even a native speaker, but this line still doesn't seem to make sense...
