the last 10+ minutes of this podcast (has to load) is him announcing to the public that he is gay. It's an amazing listen. He is a very recognizable voice in NY, was with WCBS for years before moving to ESPN recently

I've heard of Jared Max, but this is just an poor attempt at an attention grab. Plus, in this day and age - who cares?
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."

I agree. But in this case someone would actually have to listen to him in the first place.

Has anyone ever really said or thought that?
I'm kinda with markin ball on this one... I could give two shits if someone is gay or not, so them announcing it publicly really makes no sense to me. I mean if someone asks you about it, that's one thing. But, why not just live your life and not worry about making a proclamation?
was like a picture

Every time there's a famous movie star that gets married or even just dates another star... it's ALL over the news. Who cares if they're straight?
When other commentators talk about their wives, do we really need to know who they're sleeping with?
I'll tell you who cares....
I could really have used a few gay role models when I was growing up. Gay role models other than drag queens, hair dressers and movie stars dead of AIDS. Would have been nice to have a Jared Max... a smart, handsome and shockingly-regular guy. Someone who wasn't embarrassing just to look at. Someone who didn't make me cringe to hear them speak.
I could really have used being sent the message that I could grow up to be anything I wanted instead of being sent the message that I could only be what I wanted if (a) I wanted to wear a dress and sing pop songs or (b) stay in the closet.
And I think I also would have liked it if my peers in high school who picked on me and bullied me relentlessly... if THEY could also see that there are plenty of regular gay guys out there.
Just yesterday, the member here "Godfather" made some comment talking about how gay men "act like a woman" and "talk with a swish." Well Jared Max doesn't act like a woman and he sure doesn't talk with a swish... he's got quite a strong, masculine and confidant voice, actually.
So yeah.. looks like it's not JUST me who could have used a few gay role models. Looks like some straight guys might be better off if they knew some of the men they looked up to or liked were gay.
So that's why I care. And why you should, too. Even if you "don't care."
Just out of curiosity.. that's your kid in your avatar, right?
Why is it that straight people are allowed to wear wedding rings, throw big, public weddings that they announce in the news paper... talk about "my wife this" or "my girlfriend that?"
Why are straight people allowed to display pictures of their kids and families on their desks at work but when a gay person just publicly acknowledges that he's gay... it's a "proclamation?"
Well I'll make you a deal, then.
You give us every single right that you have, every protection for our families, every responsibility and benefit...
And we'll never mention it again. Sound good?
Until attacking my family is no longer a great way to get votes, I'm going to make sure you all know just who it is that you're voting against, attacking and hurting. Sorry if that makes you "roll your eyes a little."
That's not the same thing. Gay people can have all the pictures they want on their desk, they can talk about their partners until the cows come home and they can throw huge weddings (unfortunately not recognized by the state, of course). While these things may reveal to others who you are, they are just examples of living your life. That is different than writing a book, or going on a tv or radio show to explicitly announce that you are gay.
"With our thoughts we make the world"
Fair point. I never really looked at it that way. Do you think a political statement is the primary reason that gay people come out on a radio or tv show, though? I'm sure some do, but I would think not all.
"With our thoughts we make the world"
Yes. And when we do, we're accused of "pushing your lifestyle in our faces" and "flaunting it."
That's because straight people don't HAVE to do that. And nobody grows up ashamed to be straight. Or terrified their parents might find out. Or worried they'll be fired from their job because of it.
And plenty of straight people write books all about their sex lives. Lots of famous people have published memoirs recounting their numerous sexcapades. Hasn't Bristol Palin posed for the covers of magazines with her baby and talked about getting knocked up at 17?
Did we not just endure 6 months of non-stop "news" about how Price William was marrying his "opposite sex lover of 10 years?"
It sure was in this case. If you listen to his 7-minute bit where he actually came out (and then said "I'll never bring it up again), he talked about how alone he felt, how scared and suicidal. And how he hopes that he can help be a role model to younger gay men who want to get into sports but are afraid to do it.

For the record, I am not arguing that straight people don't talk about their sex lives in books, magazines, tv shows, etc. or that straight people's sex lives don't get media coverage I do feel, however, that you are equating this with intent to announce their straightness, which I don't think is the case.
Elton John's wedding was all over the news. He didn't have to explicitly tell me anything. He was getting married to another man. I could put two and two together.
"With our thoughts we make the world"
OK, true.
That said, until we all come out and just live as us, we're going to have people like our own Godfather who said that gay men "act like women" and "talk with a swish." Because until the Jared Maxs and John Barrowmans and Gareth Thomas' of the world come out, you just "put two and two together" for guys like Elton John.
And some of us are kinda tired of being seen like that.
And if you listen to his show... he really wasn't "announcing" that he was gay. He worked it into a conversation about how major straight athletes are starting to talk about how the fans are ready to accept a gay sports star.
People used to refuse to let black athletes compete with white athletes until they started to stand up and say "here I am." Obviously, you can tell a black man by looking at him. With us gay guys... sometimes we have to clue you in.
