I'm glad to see some things like being Black and White and Married in the Deep South: A Shifting Image is happening with some tolerance.

Love the words and music from Michael Franti's song...Tolerance

A child is born, and a mamma's torn
About the life that it's bound to live
A sun and moon and a modest home
Is all they asking the Lord to give
But politics and big events they never seem to notice the little guy
So make a plan or simply hold a hand but don't ever be a passer by

Tolerance or violence and the whole world goes to war
Is one enough or is one too many
Before we say, "No More"
Could you ever love a pot of gold?
Could you ever love another lonely soul?
Could you ever find a love that was oceans wide?
Could you ever find love in another stranger's eyes?

Oh, give a little,
Tolerance, tolerance
We need you more and more
So lend a hand or simply hold a friend
That's in need of a life support
Draw a picture, share a whisper
Anyway that you can rise above
And when the end is near who is goanna volunteer
To be the last one to die for love

Tolerance or violence and the whole world go to war
Is one enough or is one too many
Before we say, "No More"
No more, no more, no more, no more

We have a changing world as we now can see with an African American President....hopefully for the better.

i am glad to see that things seem to be changing for the better as well. forty years later though it is still not where i would like for them to be, but i guess changing generational things like attitudes toward things like this doesn't happen overnight..

That is true in that many would like things to stay the same without any thought to acceptance or tolerance. I gather some people are just more comfortable with relationships being the same and done so without any change.

I like what one of the mix raced boys said from the article....“black, white and just right!”

Gotta say I don't miss living in the South. Had a friend from work who was born in India, and his five year-old came inside crying in 2005: "Billy said he can't play with me anymore because I'm brown!"

Who at five gives a sh!t what color another kid's skin is? Parents are the pivot point here: either continue or break the cycle. It's a job too few of us take into consideration when creating these little beings.

I lived in the south for a while, and am now back in the Northeast. I had a good time in the south, and some of my best friends are southerners, but I did see a good bit of racism and ignorance. The whole idea of "the South will rise again" is kind of ludicrous to me. I think most of the ignorance is people not being able to step outside of themselves and the prisons-ideological, religious-that they were born into. It's foolish, and that type of ignorance belongs in the Stone Age......or the 1950s

A funny story: I once pulled into a gas station in a small town in NC. As I was doing my part to fuel the war machine, I noticed a group of about 5 rednecks hanging out by a pickup truck that had a Confederate flag hanging from a crudely constructed pole in the bed. A weird scene, in my opinion, that was made more weird by the fact that what was blasting from their speakers was something that one might not expect. Garth Brooks? No. Alan Jackson? No. The Judds? No. Conway Twitty? No. It was 2Pac. ???

One of the more unusual things I've noticed here in South Florida since moving here. I've found more young whites listening to Rap/Hip Hop than what one might think they may listen too. I've seen or felt no problems with mixed race relationships so far here in Palm Beach County, hopefully it will stay that way.
