I posted this in another post about Lollapalooza Festival but figured it deserved it's own post. Most people there seem to think that Lolla takes the crown with estimates of 100,000 or more, though Billboard reported the attendance for the weekend at 168,729 from a 200,000 capacity with no days sold out. I guess we may never no but it can't hurt to speculate. So here's some other notable big attendances.
6 & 7 July 93 Stadio Flaminio, Rome, Italy (w/U2) 80,000 each night
27/8/06 Reading Festival, England - 75,000*
25/8/06 Leeds Festival, England - 70,000*
11/7/95 Soldier Field, Chicago - 70,000 (though figures range to as low as 47,000)
14/6/98 RFK Stadium, Washington DC (TFC) 66,000
18/8/93 CNE Stadium, Toronto, (w/Neil Young) - 60,000
8/6/92 & 12/6/92 Pinkpop Festival, Holland - 60,000
5/8/95 Golden Gate Park, San Francisco 53,440
Other notable mentions are Rock Am Ring and Roskilde festivals which are 2 of Europe's largest festivals 150,000+ over the weekend and Werchter too in Belguim though I'm not sure of the exact capacity for it. Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney, Australia in 1995 was also a large one though no capacity is known, G'N'R played to 71,000 a few years pervious.
*Reading & Leeds figures confirmed by the festival, 60,000 each day weekend tix + 15,000 day tix for Reading, 10,000 for Leeds)

From what I remember, the Eastern Creek Raceway gig in Australia was played in front of approximately 35,000 people. I too remember th G'N'R gig about 4 years earlier at the same location, however, I am uncertain about that 71,000 figure. That could be right as I do remember the gig getting loads more promoton than the Pearl jam gig. Almost no promo for that gig and they still managed 35,000 people...pretty awesome.
You don't have to run and hide away
It's okay, it's okay
I love you anyway
2007: Pearl Jam concert in Düsseldorf (21. June)
2007: Chris Cornell concert in Kristiansand (2. July)
2007: The Who concert in Kristiansand (4. July)
That was 15,000 more than for Rolling Stone who played the same park a bit earlier:-)
RHCH had around half the crowd pj had...

I've heard so many different numbers about Nijmegen that i'm starting to think we'll never get an official number. 65,000 is awesome though! It looked really really big when i looked behind me from where i was.
for the first time I looked back from the second row it seemed almost impossible to estimate the attendance numbers...later on the crowd seemed as huge as at the main stage on Sziget Festival Budapest which is actually 60.000+...so;) I believe 65.000 ppl in Nijmegen...however the last numbers I heard in September were about 47.000...
I read somewhere RHCP soldout the venue weeks before the show...what's the truth??? (I am not really interested in their music since Californication but I am curious about the numbers...a little bit:) )
Eddie: Dublin & London
Anyway, Metallica played for 40,000 in oslo two weeks later and the crowd looked significantly smaller. I believe in 65.

Is this still Nijmegen you're talking about?if so, do you have any idea where i might be able to find this newspaper picture you speak of?
Thanks for that link, I didn't believe those figures either and am only going on what Five Horizons quote for this show as I've been unable to find a more reliable source. I will say though that is seated capacity so the capacity with standing on the field is likely to be higher than that but I highly doubt double.

My initial post lists several of PJ's only shows, though it's hard to say exactly as the sources of these figures aren't that reliable. The largest attendance I've been able to confirm (source, Billboard) is 40,006 for their, Sau Paulo shows in Brazil in 2005 where they played 2 nights, so 80,012 over the 2 nights. To answer the an earlier post about these shows, although the stadium could hold more I seem to remember mention by the promoter that Pearl Jam capped the capcity of these shows to 40,000 most likely to crowd safety issues so I've no doubt they played to larger audiences on their own, i.e Soldier Field, Chicago 95 etc.

Thanks, this is also in line with Ed's NW speech where he quotes 32,000 people.

Have no idea, sorry.
yes, still in nijmegen:-)
I found an article saying there we're 42,000 in Rome and 45,000 in Verona (each night). The Rome show was only supposed to be 35,000 but the promoter oversold the shows. Apparantly U2's manager Paul McGuinness made the crew count all the ticket stubs recieved.
Here's the article: http://books.google.com/books?id=9alwNfAw5-0C&pg=PT168&lpg=PT168&dq=u2+italy+attendance+1993&source=web&ots=XyFVR5FMaa&sig=G-S5YDJof8lJTYQGBK8y2xfr1cs#PPT168,M1

Took these when the show was over. Not the best but still pretty amazing to see that many people!
