    Fowler to the Cardinals

it's all relative, but I think they paid too much.
With the addition of Fowler, they now have a true leadoff man and can move Carpenter down a spot or two in the order into an RBI role where he should be. They can also move a speedy, defensively skilled Grichuk to left which will help with run prevention. He's already made them better on both sides of the ball and hasn't even put on a uniform.

Fowler will be a good player for St. Louis for the next two years and make them a much better team.
Those last three years for a OF that relays on speed when he's 33-35 will most likely turn out bad.
If they don't win the world series in the next two years they will be regretting this contract big time.

They may regret that deal in the end but is now the cost of doing business. Giants will feel same way with Melancon. You need need an immediate fix you accept bad years on a deal. As long as teams are raking in the cash on the new TV deals they will take it. With curbed international spending we will see more and more teams issuing out dumb deals. They have cash to spend and are now very limited in how they can spend it.

Yep. It's going to keep getting crazier. The free agent class after the 2018 season is stacked....there's going to be some absurd deals in a couple years.

When do you think we'll see the first billion dollar contract? 10 years? 12, 20?

We will see our first 400mil deal soon. I would guess 20 years.

The Cubs overpaid for Heyward. But they still managed to win a World Series in spite of him.

agree. I don't particularly like the cards (hell, I hate everyone) but I'm happy to see them not want to roll over to the new cub dynasty.

Tribe Baby! Huge news. This was the one weak spot on the team. Now so long as Brantley gets healthy, the Indians should be favored to return. The city is thrilled with the investment and commitment by ownership. I'm in shock.

I know the pain as an Angels fan regarding Adenhart. My condolences to Royals fans. No team should have to deal with such tragedy. RIP

I'm curious to see if other owners/GM's think Manfred was light on the punishment to Cardinals. 1 second round pick, 1 competitive balance pick at the end of the second and 2 million going from Cards to Astros. Olney or someone else on ESPN already mentioned this morning prior to the sanctions coming out that losing that competitive balance pick shouldn't really count as it was an extra thing given to Cards. I would agree. They should have had to fork over their first round pick for 2018 and their international spending pool to the Astros as well.

I agree: Cardinals should've lost ther first round pick for 2018. Do you think, if they didn't sign Fowler, and still had that pick this year, MLB would have given that pick to the Astros?

I think Manfred had to take 2 picks away so yes. This was like Goodell and Kraft back in spygate. Manfred and Cards owner are good friends like Kraft and Goodell were prior to deflategate. Manfred didn't want to make the same mistake as Goodell did and piss the other owners for coming off light in the punishment. I think he still did. They could have left that competitive balance pick alone and did 2018 first instead. Or taken away the international spending pool for 2017.
