I read the A's called up Zito.

He may face Tim Hudson in Oakland in the final week of the season. That would be pretty cool. Huddy is done after this year; I would imagine Zito too.

    Damn.
I guess I will see the replay.

    Hate to see players injured.
Been 3 GREAT games so far.
This 4th game looks like it going to be one of those 13-10 games.

Could be a fun one, and what really matters is that whoever wins the wild card game takes out the Cards.

When did this happen? I've been watching since the second inning and haven't seen this.

  • Great hustle from the 2015 rookie of the gear Kris Bryant.
  • I just saw that slide from coglan. There was nothing wrong with it. That's how you are taught to slide into second base to break up a double play.

Nothin wrong with it? He wasn't gonna come within 3' of the base til the collision turned his body and he started it pretty late. Don't think he intentionally injured him, but it wasn't a clean slide.

Its a clean slide. He didn't slide late. And he was sliding at the base. The shortstop needs to be able to protect himself against these slides.

    Wrong, unless we're talking intent.

Wrong, he went down into his slide about where the SS was

Wrong, he wouldn't have been able to reach the bag until the contact with the SS turned his top half towards the baseline.

Right, and getting out of the baseline is about the best way.

Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang had season-ending surgery Thursday night after a collision at second base in the first inning Thursday afternoon of a 9-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs, forcing the Pirates to adapt on the left side of the infield and calling into question whether Kang will be ready for spring training or opening day in 2016.

Kang had surgery to repair a fracture to the tibial plateau, an area near the knee at the top of one of two bones in the lower leg. The surgery also repaired damage to the lateral meniscus and will keep Kang out for six to eight months. That puts his return anywhere from mid-March to mid-May in 2016.

The tibial fracture is technically classified as an open reduction/internal fixation of a displaced lateral tibial plateau.

Kang was injured in a first-inning collision at second base with Cubs right fielder Chris Coghlan, who slid into him in an attempt to break up a double play.

“It is unfortunate that what would be considered heads-up baseball would cause such a serious injury,” Kang’s agent, Alan Nero of Octagon Baseball, said in a statement on Kang’s behalf. “That said, Coghlan was playing the game the way it should be played. I’m confident he meant me no harm. I appreciate everyone’s support.”

Pirates players said they also didn’t think the play by Coghlan was dirty or that he intentionally meant to harm Kang, but they also said they didn’t get a good chance to see it.

“We are taught to go in hard and to get the guy off their feet,” Pirates second baseman Neil Walker said, “and unfortunately this one led to a situation where we have one of our hottest hitters out for probably an extended period of time.”

The problem doesn’t occur until the sliding player lifts his leg, Walker said, and he doesn’t think that was the case, but hadn’t watched the play close enough to know.

“I really don’t think [Coghlan] went in there trying to hurt [Kang],” Walker said. “I kind of asked Chris when he came back, ‘You didn’t go in high did you?’ and he said he didn’t feel like he went in high.”

Shortstop Jordy Mercer, who replaced Kang in this game, went through a similar collision earlier this year with Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Pirates lost Mercer for 30 games with an MCL sprain in his left knee and is still in the process of trying to get 100 percent healthy, even though he was activated Aug. 23. He said it is a tough play for any infielder and an unfortunate play for Kang. But he also believes that those hard slides should remain a part of the game as long as they aren’t dirty.

“I’ll definitely be on his side and be helping him through it as much as I can,” Mercer said. “It is tough not being able to be out there to help your team. It is not a good feeling.”

Mercer said his knee is “getting better every day,” but he still needs to wear a protective brace and he said the injury he sustained — and, by appearances, it looks similar to that of Kang’s — takes a lot of time to heal.

Hurdle refused to speculate on the nature of the injury or how long Kang might be out, but he said the strength of the Pirates has been their infield depth.

“We could possibly lose a player that you like having,” Hurdle said. “We are in a position where we have created depth, we took on injuries with Harrison, we took on injuries with Mercer and we came through it and performed and we do believe we have adequate depth to perform and play well.”

In Kang’s absence, Hurdle said there is a strong possibility Aramis Ramirez would go back to third base exclusively and he and Mercer would man the left side of the infield, but added that there were plenty of other options.

The slide was 100% clean. You see that same slide 25 times a day on any given day during the season. Kang has to defend himself better. That's the bottom line. I hate to see any player get hurt, even in a rival division.

His left arm was headed directly for the bag when he started his slide.

Man, Maddon is a little bitch. Rizzo, who crowds the plate and leads the league in hbp's, gets grazed after they put one on Hollidays ear hole and he whines about it? Sorry, but that deserved some retaliation.

And you guys are wrong about the slide. Kang and the Pirates are taking it well, but that slide was bush league. Compare it to Hollidays slide into Scutaro from a couple years ago in the playoffs that put everybody in a tizzy.
