Cheerleading is a huge part of the Dominican Winter Leagues. This is from the team I saw in January http://www.escogido.com/app/chearleaders.aspx. They get up on the Dugout every 2-3 innings and do some choreographed dance while the players watch from below - outrageous.

is kenny powers playing in that league next year?

Ah the Dominican Leagues. Where even the cheerleaders are on steroids.

haha...no but Karim Garcia played for Escogito, and a few students and I chanted Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeedrooooooo, Peeeeeeeeeeeedrooooooo when he came up to the plate, then he struck out and gave us a death stare. I stopped but they followed him out to left field which was right next to the other team's bullpen. The story they tell is that they started chanting "Who eese" "Karim Garcia", and the bullpen started rolling while he got pissed and started yelling "Pedro's a bitch" then threatened to fight them. I'm not sure how true it is (it very well could be b/c they came back with dip and autographed baseballs from the bullpen players), but he definitely pulled himself out of the game in the 8th inning.

Either way go to a game in Santo Domingo it's unlike anything you've ever seen. You can buy 6 packs of Presidente for a negotiated price usually 300-400 pesos (or 9-10 bucks), bottles (yes bottles) of Anejo rum for 350 pesos, and empanadas are 100 pesos. The players are usually longtime major leaguers or youngsters trying to make a name for themselves, and it's fun as hell.

fuck the twins...and fuck the fake baseball playing American League. Ray Allen would be a relevant player in the NBA if they had a designated shooter, but they don't because you actually have to play the game.

Ehhhh...they need significant contributions from Mauer and Morneau and I'm not sure they're gonna get em. I still like the White Sox to rebound, but it's a soft enough division that Verlander may win it single-handedly.

Ha ha, I like this one. A DH is like a football player. Just does one thing.

If you can't play defense you should be... retired.

A DH can field about as well as a pitcher can hit. A pitcher essentially does one thing as well.

You AL fans come off as completely snobbish and douchebag-ish with your "The NL will have the DH eventually" shit. No, the NL will NOT have the DH. We will continue to play REAL baseball for a long time. You guys enjoy your beer league softball.

in a perfect world, the dh will be abolished. sadly this isn't a perfect world.

it would be nice if both leagues played on a level playing field though. what a novel idea.

It's not snobbish, it's just the way the game is going. There is too much money involved and if one is going to change, it's the NL.

    hmm...what if...

    every position was DH eligible.

SS is a fielding position. flash the leather and earn some cash.

The reason there's too much money involved is that certain players are going to get paid $30M when they're 42 years old and will need to sit in a rocking chair at 3B if there isn't a DH rule.

Your argument about pitchers getting hurt batting or running bases or whatever is bs. You can name one example. The Rockies Mike Hampton contract was a disaster because, guess what, he couldn't pitch. He actually bashed HR's left & right in that place.

That is the logical next step. Just make baseball like football - 9 guys play offense, 9 other guys play defense. Sounds great, huh?

I really have to get out of here and head to new york. This argument isn't going anywhere.

While there is no chance this will happen, here's something we all can agree on.

    I'll sum up your argument:

My pitcher, Wang, got hurt running around the bases, so pitchers shouldn't bat.
My team has a guy signed until he's 42 so I need there to be a DH position for him to play.
There is a DH rule now, and that can't possibly ever change.
My manager's giant binder would explode if he had to make actual decisions in a baseball game.

I find the "AL is beer league softball" or that it's "not real baseball" comments far more snobbish than anyone defending the DH.

Maybe snobbish is the wrong word. The argument is basically - the DH is here, so get used to it. Well, astroturf used to be here, and steroids used to be here, and ugly concrete mausoleum stadiums used to be here, and we (mostly) got rid of all those. So why can't we get rid of the DH?

I think the DH would be fine if there was no interleague, and it only came up in the World Series. What makes AL fans snobbish is not that they like the DH per se, but the fact that as NL fans we consistently hear about how much better the AL during interleague play. It's a completely unfair proposition when (in the case of the Brewers) the team has to go into Fenway where a dude has pretty much only played DH for like 5 years and is hitting .315 with 20 HRs, then Yankee Stadium where some guy hitting about the same exists, and this is generally the case for most teams in the AL. Conversely we either call up Matt Gamel for two weeks, or send up Mark Kotsay/Craig Counsell/Carlos Gomez. Then, when the AL comes to the NL, you get weird things like Adrian Gonzalez playing right field for a few days to make room for Ortiz, but the Red Sox still have David Ortiz hitting (and 6 games with him in the field isn't as harmful as 160). That guy doesn't exist in the National League, because he wouldn't be around for 162 games. So the AL, with one extra hitter, consistently beats the NL in these games because they have an advantage not because they play better baseball.

What's more interesting to me is the fact that the NL and AL have split the last 10 World Series, and really the Giants were one bad inning and the Phillies one bad Pedro start away from the NL taking 7 of the last 10.

You're right about the Giants, but the Phils were still a Game 7 away, with a beat-up Cole Hamels pitching. Far from a sure thing. Yanks were clearly better than the Phils in that series.

Big thanks to their DH, of course. Meanwhile Phils sent 4th OF Ben Francisco out to play DH.

The day Vegas gets a team is the day Pete Rose is their manager.
