bartolo colon (aka the phillie phantic) to oakland.

some questionable moves in the bay area this offseason.

Colon was alright in NY last year. His stamina wasn't quite there for the whole season but that wasn't a big shock considering how long he'd been out of MLB. Now that he's got a full season under his belt again I think he'll be a decent starter in Oakland with their huge outfield. Even if he's mediocre, he's not costing them very much.

    Yeah, I saw that too.
I, for one, would be sorry if they let Hamilton go.

Yes, they aren't saying so, but if they sign Fielder they will let Josh walk after the season, or trade him if they aren't in contention. I would hate to see that too, but Josh is always injured, getting older, etc. He hasn't given us a full, productive season. When he is on, he is dominant. And he is more or less the face of the franchise. But Fielder is younger and way more consistent.

so let me get this straight, if they sign Darvish (which they pretty much have to) and counting the $50 million for the rights to talk with him the Rangers are probably going to end up spending more money on a guy who has never pitched in the major leagues than what they offered to Cliff Lee? insanity

I don't remember what they offered Lee but I think they'll be looking at around $110 mil investment. Does seem a bit crazy but he is young and only the salary goes towards the luxury tax.

the $50 million just for the rights to negotiate with the guy is the insane part to me. would the same team give someone $50 million just to negotiate with a cliff lee, roy halliday, or cc sabathia? highly doubt it. i can't imagine that conversation with the owner - "uhh can i have $50 million dollars...just to negotiate with a player who has never pitched in the major leagues."

I hear you. The posting process is really strange. Boras had a good idea to scrap the current format and have the team posting the player get a % of the players contract based on how many contract years the Japanese team forgoes. The more years they give up, the more money they get.

Victor Martinez looks like he's out for the year with a blown knee. Wonder how that happened.

Interesting. Does he play Winter Ball? If not, he could be in a little bit of trouble if it's an Aaron Boone situation. I'm not sure the Tigers have the money to replace him outside of hoping to the price drops on someone like Pena, Damon, or Matsui. I'm pretty sure Damon enjoyed his time in Detroit so he might be open to a return there if he's going to get steady playing time.

Not sure. The article on Hardball Talk had no info as to how it happened. Aaron Boone is obviously the first thing I thought of too. MLBTR says it happened in his "offseason conditioning" so it may not be. Still, tearing an ACL conditioning for baseball seems like a tough thing to do though. Interesting thought on Damon, that would definitely seem like a fit.

Speaking of the Tigers and money. I read the other day, and I don't know how accurate it is, I believe it was from MoMass, that if the Yankees spent the same percentage of their revenue on payroll that the Tigers do, they would have a payroll of $370 million.

Darvish getting 6 years, Rangers won that battle it sounds like. Funny when the team wants more years and the player wants less.
  • Monster RainMonster Rain Posts: 1,415
The Rangers better hope he doesn't turn out to be like pretty much every other Japanese pitcher and burn out before that deal is up or they'll feel pretty stupid about insisting on that 6th year.

MLBTR has the latest report at 5 years with a player option for a 6th year. So yeah, 6 years if he doesn't work out well and 5 if he is good. Ouch.

I just read this story about Craig Counsell and a Marlins coach on their 1997 championship team. It's an interesting story to say the least.

if they had not signed him at all, would they still have been on the hook for the $51M? :?

Was expecting a bigger annual value. 6th year is guaranteed right? I find it funny that the rangers wanted more years than darvish did to maximize the posting fee investment.

Tampering expectations, haha. Tough to do that with a $112 million investment.

He can opt out after 5 so yeah, if he's good they get 5 years. If he's bad they get 6
  • FlaggFlagg Posts: 5,856
I don't think this deal is stupid at all. Like I said, with the new TV deal they have the money. And we are talking about the Texas Rangers here - historically one of the worst professional sports franchises in history, who have gotten so close the last couple of years only to have their hearts ripped out. They had to make this deal.

If it was another team with skins on the wall then maybe they don't make this kind of deal, but for the Rangers is was a no brainer. Their window is right now and they have to go for it. I want Darvish to qualify for that opt-out clause because that would mean he would be great in that same window - when the rest of the team is great.
