I say Verlander. I know people don't generally like pitchers as MVP, but he's my pick.

On Tuesday, when I asked him about the collapse of the team, Gonzalez blamed the schedule, not the Almighty.

"We play too many night games on getaway days and get into places at 4 in the morning," Gonzalez said. "This has been my toughest season physically because of that. We play a lot of night games on Sunday for television and that those things take a lot out of you."

I told Gonzalez that teams like the Red Sox and Yankees have long had those challenges, it's part of playing for a high-profile team.

"Why does it have to be?" he said. "They can put the Padres on ESPN, too. The schedule really hurt us. Nobody is really reporting that."

last night was about the best 5 hours of baseball I have ever watched...

I started on philly-braves. told my wife "I can't believe I'm pulling for ATL" (more on that later). but, as the game went on, I started to say "fuck the braves" due to my loooooong dislike of them. an empty upper deck in the biggest game of the season? frauds :x . props to the phillies for never giving in, even when you know a few guys were probably thinking "what the fuck are we doing" . bourne and uggla being thrown out, wilson booting the DP ball, martinez' catch on chipper.....a lot of shit went wrong for the braves. and kimbrel? NOT the ROY...not with 8 blown saves.

I barely watched NY-TB until the ninth. I saw the two quick outs and thought "oh well." Johnson comes up and I'm like "this dude has a one in 10 chance to get a HIT, much less a HR." I actually missed the HR in the split second I switched to another game. and then, the jams got out of in extras....against a yankees team wearing numbers in the 60s  . like everyone else, I saw the game winner 3 minutes after the sox lost.

the sox? goddam, how many ways can you fuck up a game :wtf: ? 4 hits allowed thru 8 2/3 and you find a way to lose? mad props to the orioles. first time ever that last place equalled a successful season

back to "pulling for the braves"....I can't stand tony la russa. what a pompous POS. all his success has been steroids fueled. the guy is an absolute asshole and I hope his team goes out in three. I must say, tho, philly may have fucked themselves by letting the cards in. and that "best fans in the game"? bullshit. that whole reds-cards feud has had some pretty ugly racial undertones from those "great" fans.

these playoffs are easy for me. gotta get phillies-brewers in the second round. fuck the d-bags...a fraud team in a fraud baseball town. they're already worried they can't sellout their weekday playoff games

AL is easy too....tigers and rays to the second round. dislike of the yankees is a no brainer (sorry, cliffy, neilly, etc.) and, as long as GWB may be in the front row, fuck the rangers too.

tim kurkjian said last night was the "the greatest night ever in regular season baseball" and I agree  . I tried to explain that to my wife when I finally turned off the TV....but she doesn't get it

P.S. my boys are STILL World Champs!

yeah ... i'm not that keen on granderson ... if his avg was in the .280's maybe ...

and i'm one who's not going to pick a pitcher either ... he racked up a lot of those wins facing inferior competition ... not to discount what he's done and his ability ... i just think he doesn't bat and only plays 1 out of every 5 games puts him at a disadvantage for mvp voting ...

as a baseball fan, I love how football is an afterthought on ESPN today.

I like football, but the 24/7/365 coverage drives me crazy.

P.S. why was terry collins CRYING?

edit: the first time I hear TLR referred to as a "genius", I may throw a beer thru my TV :x

It's awful on ESPN when all they talk about in football...even during the offseason.

  • I was stunned when I read that quote. I can't believe the excuses coming out of Boston over the past 4-5 days. Too many Sunday night games on ESPN? Seriously? If that's the case, why didn't the Yankees and Phillies blow their playoff spots, too? The best teams with the biggest stars get the most primetime games. That's what you sign up for when you leave San Diego for the team with the #2 payroll in the sport. Also, that argument isn't valid anymore anyway because MLB put a limit on how many times ESPN can schedule any team to play on Sunday night because the Yankees and Red Sox used to have their start times switched much more than they do now.

I'm not sure which complaint is worse: Gonzalez's or Lackey's complaint about the text message from TMZ 30 minutes before the game Sunday. Maybe Lackey would pitch better if he wasn't checking his text messages when he should be preparing for the game. Maybe the collapse was karmic retribution for divorcing a woman battling cancer in both breasts AND holding her to the prenup that says you get the house and money. He filed on August 30 and the season went downhill from there. You had to do that during the season and while she's still undergoing treatment? Shit, even Larry David knows you can't dump a woman battling cancer. Lackey must not get HBO.

    Thought this was amusing...

If you ignore Ludwick, who was traded at midseason, not one Padre hit double digit HRs this year (and he only hit 11).

And their RBI leader had 44.

The fact that they even managed to win 71 games is pretty amazing to me.

    wow^^^^

another random thought...I was watching a tigers game earlier this year and they sent like 7 consecutive latins to the plate. interesting....

and cabrera rebounded pretty well from his spring training shenanigans.

I dunno, I heard plenty of Trent Dilfer loud stupid bullshit today. I don't think I heard a mention of the Cards all day besides the 15 seconds on SC "covering" the game. I think the winning teams deserve more air time than the teams that choked.

Bushleague. Happens almost every year though. How about them blocking the SWB Yankees from playing in Newark next season? I guess they realize if they let them, they will then have the 3rd best rotation in the New York area.

That's the Mets. The stories of paranoia that I've heard are absurd and that has nothing to do with the players, Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson. It's mostly from ownership and the head of the PR department.
mostly, try like 100% from da coupons. Every since Freddy took over the team has sucked balls and will still suck as long as the coupon family owns the team. Ffs Freddy didn't even want piazza, Doubleday had to beg Freddy to make the trade for Piazza. Let's not even get into canning bobby v and replacing him wit art howe. Hell yogi coulda done a better job managing the team. The best is firing Willie at 3am during a west coast road trip after flying him out there to manage a game. The icing on the cake was when the great omar manaya thought adam rubin was going after his job. I won't even get into the recreation of ebbets field and the lack of met pride for the first year or tony b challenging a buncha minor leagues to a fight while shirtless.
