Dave Grohl just lied to the whole world

Watching the RnRHOF show from last nights HBO special and Grohl just said that Rush's fan base is only rivaled by the Grateful Dead! I know some Rush freaks, but only rivaled by the Dead? I don't know if they compare to our faithful (of course I'm pretty sure I'm slightly biased). But really what are they going to say about our boys when the time comes "Pearl Jam's fan base is only rivaled by The Grateful Dead and Rush!"

Rush's fan base is huge (you'd be surprised at the people into rush) but i agree that there are others that probably rival it in size... maybe Metallica's and DMB's...

this one probably would too... if the band would actually go on tour...... broken record over here......
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.

Haha..yeah Rush actually tour a lot and hit up most of the country on their long tours. They've played Dallas 4 times since 06.

Being an avid Rush fan and PJ fan, I agree with Dave.

With the exception of maybe Phish, Rush's fanbase is only rivaled by the intensity of the Dead's following. With Rush, there's always been this mentality of "it's us against the world". You don't get that with PJ. PJ was massive, and "cool" for a very long time. PJ was mainstream. Eventually they embraced "it's our way or the highway", but Rush did that from day 1. It's a different beast. No-one ever holed themselves up in their room with a copy of Ten and thought they had found a world that no-one else knew. I'm not saying the fans are any more or less passionate. I'm saying the cult following for Rush rivals what the Dead/Phish were able to do (obviously the scene is WAY different between the two).

  • I work right by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I've seen Rush fans out there protesting on a couple of occasions. I also know the folks over at the Rock Hall, and they were often inundated with phone calls from insane Rush fans demanding they be inducted. Also, I met a guy from Rolling Stone and heard stories of writers being threatened for mediocre Rush reviews. Rush fans are insane.

I've been a Rush fan since 1991 when I was 14. I've loved how Rush has been seen as outsiders since day 1. Every time someone gave me a weird look, or snickered, when I said I loved Rush...it just made it that much more special. As Dave said, only recently have they been seen as "cool", and it's been...weird. It's great they are finally getting the recognition they deserve, but the sense of "us against them" has diminished ever so slightly.

If it's based on loyalty and not size I have no issue with it.

I dunno, Rush may has never been quite as big as PJ in the 90s, but it seems once they get a fan they keep them. Lotta PJ fans have come and gone through the different eras and they've taken a pretty big hit by ignoring entire regions for a long time.

Rush fans had a point. Until they were announced as being inducted this year I had no idea they were not already in. Couldn't believe that it took this long.

Deep Purple is another example of this. Iron Maiden too to a lesser extent.

Rush and Pearl jam are the two bands I've seen the most and, well, I also tend to agree with Dave. Thats not a judgement or an opinion on which band is "best" or which fanbase is better.
It just feels right to me what he says...

I agree. I wasn't even talking about PJ. The most loyal and rabid fanbase I've seen and been a part of is for Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, and most people here have probably never heard of them.

  • I agree with Dave Grohl. Its not the size of the fan base... its the fanaticism of the core.
