Etiquette of Collecting
Likely - like many others - I joined 10C to get better seats at concerts and maybe buy a couple things here and there from the goods section. Then I started reading the forums - delving deeper and deeper into my membership. I have (for now anyway) been able to stay away from vinyl - which I have been told is a good thing - but - I have caught the poster bug. Not sure if you can check my OP's by user name - likely - but I have started some with the hope to educate myself - and I must say - it's worked pretty well - I certainly know a lot more today than I did a month ago. I have received an incredible amount of advise from the Poster Freaks - and appreciate it greatly. I have decided to collect posters from the shows I attend - and - the ones I love. I certainly have no intention of being a flipper - or - and ebay seller.
I would say - right now - there are 6 or 7 posters I'd really like to get - just really like the posters. Certainly there are dozens I would LOVE to have - but - I don't have $10k sitting around to blow on posters. The ones I want are almost all reasonably priced - but - not free.
That's the background - so - let us get closer to the question. I have read forums about certain members - how they are hated - blacklisted - ect ect ect - 'cause they were found out to be flippers or ebay sellers. I have also read that it's a free world - free market - they should be able to do as they please. Now - I don't completely agree with someone going to a small venue concert - and buying 100 of the 400 available posters - just to put them on ebay - but - even that's hard to justify - what if they need the cash because of tough times....
Anyway - I have also been told that I am here during a great time - because soon items will be hitting the goods section - such as a limited vinyl of the AV shows perhaps - or - a blu-ray concert for that weekend - or - anything else in limited issue - maybe a fanny pack to match the backpack so many missed out on.
So - I guess my question is - debate and discuss - if I were to purchase some limited item - meaning - I just happen to log on at the right time - see something that I know will get eaten up eat quickly - pay $50 bucks for it - see it selling for $400 3 days after it's sold out - am I wrong to buy this limited issue item when I can - knowing I am only buying it so I can either trade it for 1,2, or 3 of the posters I want (since my wife won't just let me buy them - I've apparently spend enough on PJ stuff this year) or sell this limited item so I can buy the posters I want - is this considered poor ettiquet around here? Understanding - I am the kinda guy who owns a PJ20 Billboard Print - I have not flipped it - not been tempted to sell it - I got it 'cause I want it - it's currently being framed - and will take place of honor in my living room and will be willed to my kids.
I guess I am asking 'cause I don't wanna be that guy - just curious your thoughts....
Cheers.

I've always thought if you feel the need to ask an ethics question, you already know the answer. Do what feels right. Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

Not saying it is right or wrong but what you are describing is the definition of flipping. Buying the item and then turning around and immediately selling it at an inflated price.
For some limited items, Santos and the 10C frown upon flipping. They have even shut down a few ebay auctions.0 -

ps... didn't mean it in a mean way... just fun
and to answer your question...
If you buy something to make a profit off pearl jams name then thats wrong...
I had the deluxe blu-ray which I saw going for $500... and I may well be out of work next year (due to increase studies and practical requirements), and I thought $500 would be pretty hard to turn down... but then I thought, hey its Pearl Jams name, I shouldn't be able to profit out of it...
Maybe in time I could sell it, but its too soon...
SO I opened it, and played it...
Good luck... and welcome..Sydney 11/02/2003

lol
OK - 1 regret so far - maybe more to come - I actually wouldnt sell something - although I said I would - so that I could buy the posters I wanted - I type and think too fast - sorry about that. And one of the previous posters is right - even trading something just purchased for what you actually want is the definition of flipping - so - thats not good either - although I do see a lot of recently released limited items being traded (at what the paid value was I guess).
Been Shorty a long time - kinda like Longy - lol.
I hope I don't get a rep from this post - I honestly was inquiring because I don't want to do something that would give me one. I haven't been here long - but it didn't take me to long to realize that if I were to have purchased a PJ20 Blu-Ray - damn - I could trade if for a poster or two that I want - just made sense - until I saw how people that did that were talked about in the forums - so I inquired.
When I write this second post - however - it should be noted - I received more emails telling me to do whatever the F I wanted - than posts were in the forum.
I think I know what I will do,,,,,,,,,stop posting for a while.

Shorty - I know it seems strange but selling an exclusive item at an inflated cost and then buying an exclusive item at an inflated cost definitely feels different to the community than trading one exclusive item for another. It may take longer, but I think trading is the way to go - after all, one man's trash is another man's treasure
I have the EV songbook and will not put it on eBay, but if I see on here someone looking for a trade and there's an item of significance to me, I will definitely do that. To me it is a vain and useless product, to others it is a gem! all encompassing trip forum, where people talk about zombie shows and hot pictures of Ed. I won't tell you which one I take part in.
seriously, dude, there are a LOT of people around here that buy something merely because it says limited. they think of it as an investment. otherwise, why keep things sealed? but most are smart about it, or at least aren't the first one to jump off the cliff and offer to sell or trade.
Look at the PJ20 vinyl. that thing didn't sell in goods very long ago and Lost Dogs is FLOODED with people trying to trade/sell for up to a 500% profit. but if it's a trade, it seems more acceptable than asking for cash.
it's weird. sometimes flipping around here is tolerated by the members and the mods, depending on who it is or what item it is, other times people get completely attacked for it and/or the mods lock it up.
LOTS of good people here, but LOTS of judgmental hypocrites as well. just warnin' ya.Gimli 1993

Great post. I think intent is mostly what it is about. None of my purchases have been made with selling in mind. If i didn't want it for my collection I didn't buy it - not even as trade bait - to me this is flipping - just a different kind of flipping.
I don't regard most selling on ebay as flipping, it is allowing the market to set the rate (the US capitalist way??). I do regarding buying something and selling it on ebay immediately as flipping though, buying loads of posters at a show and sellign them the next day etc.
I have a number of sealed items - vinyls - but i intend to get a record player one day and play them, they're not for sale. I have two vinyls left to collect to have my complete collection (Binaural and LO2L). I only buy sealed because I want to be the first to open them and also want to make sure they are mint - I do realise i could come unstuck here if the record is damaged and unable to be seen, but that's a risk I am willing to take. Buying them sealed protects the investment I am making i guess.
But to get sealed vinyl I have to pay through the nose - mostly on ebay, but by being patient, setting upper limits on bids, not getting sucked into bidding wars in the last minute, i have scored sealed vinyls far lower than I'd have expected. Right now I'm trying to get my last two vinyls and resisting the urge to fork out the near $300 for a sealed binaural on ebay - but i don't see many of these come up. But I'll be patient - but I'll pay far more than I could have paid if I bought it when it came out - even if I buy it from someone here. Them's the breaks i guess. I'm in the open market and I have to accept the price the market places on this items. I'm not interested in reissues or bootlegs, just the first editions that I should have purchased originally - but was quite happy with CDs.
But this brings me to a question. Nothing was purchased to be traded and the few doubles I have may be traded eventually - one of my open Yields has just been traded. But what if i suddenly need cash in a hurry. Trading here would not solve that problem of needing fast cash - ebay would be the only fair place to go and allow the true market value to be established.
I think intent is where it is at, and the only person who really knows the intent is the seller. I see both sides of this and ultimately, ebay can be a godsend or the devil himself.0 -
