"Sad" in Quebec City for Noah
First time ever doing a request but promised my 10 year old son Noah I would do my best to share his story. It has been an amazing journey to see Noah fall in love with the band that we love so deeply. And Thursday we will be able to take him to hear PJ live for his first time in Quebec. For the last couple of years he has been on fire learning PJ songs on multiple instruments, primarily guitar...but the song that he absolutely adores playing and that ironically makes him the happiest is "Sad". As parents, it is about way more than just being psyched to see your kid happy to be learning a new skill or to find a hobby. What we have seen is our intense spirited persistent kid who we really struggle to help sometimes...he has finally found an outlet for feelings that he otherwise had a hard time containing. When he is angry or frustrated or bored or feeling down...he now has a place to process it...with his guitar playing the PJ songs he loves. To have him stomp off in a fit of anger and to then hear the notes of Sad/Corduroy/Undone/Porch/Off He Goes/etc, ring through the house as his outlet for strong feelings...we are so thankful and so relieved. As he heads into his teenage years this very well could be one of the the things that supports him from the intensity of life and helps him through.
And since we also love to do our best at playing music...we have something sacred that we share as a family. Noah and his Dad played "Sad" at the school talent show in January and brought the house down. It was amazing. Noah he marches to his own beat...and in our society that is not easy for a kid. PJ has helped him in so many ways we can't even put to words. Or to see him calmly trying to help his sister play along to Wishlist or Unthought Known on her Uke...these are moments of connection and joy for the two of them that we prayed for, and this music is making it possible.
For us as parents... PJ has been there from the beginning...helping us find the mojo to do this parenting thing in addition to all the other ways the songs have supported and helped us through our lives. And now to see it coming full circle with our own kids...magic. We are so thankful for what the band has done for us, for our son, and for us as a family. So deeply grateful and thankful. Noah reminded me that he things the band loves to hear stories about how the music has touched peoples lives and in that way it is like giving back. He thinks they would love to hear his story and I think it is awesome that he has the confidence to know his story is really meaningful. I know he is right about the band receiving inspiration and energy from us as fans, which is why after all these years of holding in my requests and stories about how different songs have changed my life, I decided to go ahead and honor his wish to tell this story.
Here are some snippets of videos of Noah and Sad from the last 6 months. For him to get to see and hear it played in person would be a treasure. I have never done a request...don't even really know how I feel about doing a request...but know that I made a promise to Noah that I would try my best to get these videos to the band because he really thinks they would love to know they have a friend in Maine who loves them, who their music has helped, and who will be at the show on Thursday ready to rock out to whatever setlist they unfold for us all!!!

the day he transposed Sad to his banjo...took him all of 30 seconds to figure out. i am jealous of his skills!! in full disclosure he hasn't played it on banjo again. "not the right vibe" apparently. (his words!)

I also hope for the other requests popping up on the Quebec roll call forum. What incredible stories. Pearl Jam has helped so many of us. I can only hope that hearing our stories (whether in the form of requests or otherwise) has helped them in some way. So excited to share an evening with this band and a giant roomful of people who all have been touched by the music of the band we all love. See you all soon!
