Pete Townshend Les Paul #5

Hey,

So at the Vancouver show last night Ed was playing a Les Paul (during a couple/few songs) that appeared to be a replica/copy of a Pete Townshend #5 Les Paul. Does anybody know anything about this?? Is it a copy, or did Pete actually give one of his guitars to Ed to use?? Pretty cool if he did............

Ain't it funny when things change so much, it's all state of mind?

I asked Ed about it after the Hulabaloo gig. I asked if it was actually Pete's... but, he said it was a 'reasonable facsmile'. I told him that Pete's guitar was like the 'Holy Grail of Guitars' for me because i had a Who poster on my wall as a kid with Pete wailing on it. He said he had that same poster.

Add: The 1976 Les Paul Delux (Number 5) is now in a personal collection and was on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

  • My understanding is that there are/were (could be) numerous '#5's", or any other number for that matter. So, i suppose it is still possible that the one ed used might be one of Pete's. But, as you say, Ed did indicate that the one he uses is a 'reasonable facsimile'. Hmmm, somehow I would be surprised that Ed created a replica especially given the relationship that he and Pete seem to have. But who knows for sure?? (Well, we know at least 2 people who would know for sure ;))........

From what i understand, Pete's original was sold to a private collector. According to this website, there were only one of each:
"This is Pete Townshend's # 5 Les Paul Guitar. It was used on stage and in the studio from 1976 to 1979. It can be seen pictured in the 1979 Tour program as well as in the movie The Kids are Alright. Pete had numerous Les Paul's modified by adding a humbucking pickup. He had them numbered from 1 to 9 based on the tuning requirements of various songs. Over the years several of them were broken and never replaced. At this time the following numbers can be accounted for: #1, #3, #5, #6 and #9.
#1 - Wine Red - Retained by Pete
    #2 - Sunburst - Whereabouts Unknown
#3 - Gold Top - Hard Rock Vault - Orlando, FL.
#4 - Wine Red - Broken And Not Replaced
    #5 - Wine Red - Represented Here - Serial No. 00129875
    #6 - Sunburst - Private Collection - Serial No. 99222939
#7 - Black - Broken And Not Replaced
#8 - Sunburst - Broken And Not Replaced
    #9 - Sunburst - Hard Rock Hotel - Las Vegas - Serial No. 9921766"

Yeah.. I really want either Pete or Ed to have it. I hope whomever bought it is a guitar player and it gets played... because I believe a historic guitar like that, needs to be played, and not just stuffed in a frame and left hanging on a wall.

Ah yes, his sunburst '56 Strat, the one from which so many Even Flow solo's have been born (and I think used on The Fixer/The Fixer video?) THAT would be a must have guitar.

At one of the San Francisco gigs in 2006, Mike played a black Strat during 'All Along The Watchtower' that he destroyed at the end and Eddie ran and jumped on it and rode it like a skateboard across the stage.
Eddie started packing up his stuff, like it was the end of the show... but, Mike came out with his '56 Sunburst.
Eddie asked, "There's more? I thought when you busted up your guitar, it meant the show was over. Are you going to bust up that one?"
Mike hugged it like it was a baby and said, "Never." Then, played 'Yellow Ledbetter'.
    ...
We saw Mike signing the broken black Strat and found out later it was the prize for the fan that had won the 'Lunch with Mike' charity auction earlier that day. It's okay to hang that one on the wall.
