They call it ringing

I can’t remember what true silence sounded like

now that the ringing is constant

sometimes it is disguised by outside sounds

but as I try to fall asleep it is ever present and inescapable

I practice accepting it

I put my attention elsewhere

apparently, the noise is made by my own mind

It is striving to listen

and while trying to listen, it rings

Or hums like a piece of electrical equipment

It reminds me of the long track on a Ghost is born

fortunately, I notice it less during the day

And I have yet to layer white noise on top of it

an expert suggested sleeping with the sound of artificial rain

Yet I don’t really like the stress of a rain storm with thunder every night

plain acceptance seems to work best

    Good tinnitus poem, justam.
When my tinnitus first started in the fall of 1993, I thought I would lose my mind.  All that constant, pervasive noise 24/7 was really hard to handle (strange to think it hasn't stopped for one second in a little over 29 years now).  One of the things that helped get me through a difficult and long period of adjustment was writing and sketching.
So what you created there is great.  Good job and well done!
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

It's funny.  My Tinnitus is pretty annoying, yet I sleep with ear plugs in, because I like silence when I sleep, but all I hear is the ringing....
