Best stoner albums

  • not my thing, but i would say anything by Kyuss
I don't see them as stoner rock at all?!?

Phish and GD are my top two guesses as I don't smoke and I like Kyuss.
really?  i thought they were one of the more notable stoner rock bands out there.
I'll backtrack for a second there.  Slow burner albums can be considered as stoner rock so I'll agree to an extent.

Anybody ever listen to Tallest Man On Earth?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_rock

    Interesting description.

So I guess Monster Magnet and Soundgarden could be considered Stoner Rock too then?
i would say probably, when i always thought of stoner rock that was the description that i kinda pictured
I always pictured Pink Floyd, Doors, Beatles songs like Paperback Writer and stuff like that.  Mostly 70's stuff.  I never thought modern music was stoner too but I get it after reading the description.  Never put much stock into it.

I used to joke with a buddy of mine that introduced me to Tallest Man On Earth and I said u like "dope smoking music" and he replied, "yes", lol.

So I now fully understand what a Stoner Rock band is!

I know about doom metal/Stoner rock but I didn’t think this thread meant that.  Some of my favorite bands like Elder & This Will Destroy You are Doom/Stoner, but it’s not music I listen to when I’m baked.

stoner rock is just the term for slowed down doom, because it’s like the musicians are stoned, not the listener.
I'm like an opening band for your mom.

I thought the same. I'm a Kyuss fan and never smoked, but do associate them with that seen.

Blues for the Red Sun is superb!!

If we're talking Randy California, I always liked Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus during those hazy moments of bygone years.
I would definitely go with Electric Ladyland over Axis.

Besides the obvious, Dopesmoker by Sleep and Monoliths and Dimensions by Sunn O))), I would say Satan Worshiping Doom by Bongripper can be very heavy, limb melting music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsDz5qphC3c

I guess everyone has their own version of "stoner" music. I lean more toward the doom. As far as just stoner rock, I recommend All Them Witches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjZXmJJc2Gs

Chron Goblin (local pride - they're from Calgary!)
Clutch - self titled from 1995
Explosions in the Sky - especially the NPR show (on YouTube) from the 9:30 Club. I zone out to it almost once a week.

Definitely Weedeater. If you dig them, you should check out Black Tomb.

Very cool to see this one up here.  I found a nice promo copy of this in a thrift store early this year for a couple dollars.  Was thrilled!

looked for cover art credit for that dream syndicate on discogs. didnt see any.

appears like a  ripoff of Alex Grey and what TOOL does for their art...

The Dream Syndicate cover art is by Alex Aliuem who ripped off his first name from Alex Grey, lol.
Well, if you're gonna borrow, borrow from the best, right?
The music itself is marvelous, textured, mysterious and moody at times, a lot of it definitely psychedelic.  They really got out there on some this work this time. Steve Wynn wanted the group to perform the entire album live (which would have been quite a feat) but it came out right as the pandemic hit.  It probably won't happen now as the band is finishing up another album and Wynn is working on a memoir.

Alex Grey's work is fantastic.  I have an oversized book of his art work.  Also used to have a signed copy of his more literary The Mission of Art that I sold years ago.  Pretty good book and I'm glad I read it, but it wasn't inscribed to me so no reason to keep it and I needed the money.
