    Every time I see this thread, a very perplexing question arises in my head, one that has been asked many times.  The question arises because almost all the examples given here of rock musicians singing the blues are white bands.  So the question is:  "Can white people sing the blues?"

    There are good arguments suggesting they should not.  Here's a good example of what I mean:

    That article presents an argument against whites singing and playing the blues that is hard to argue against.  I have about 65 albums filed under blues in my collection.  Almost all of the artists represented in that section are black musicians.  My blues section does not include cross-over artists like John Mayall, Canned Heat, Harvey Mandel, or The Rolling Stones (etc.), all of whom are steeped in the blues.  In years past, I had kept some of those white artists in my blues section but eventually pulled them out.  To my way of thinking, blues is basically a black music genre.

    But then wait!  I see I still have Charlie Musselwhite and Paul Butterfield filed under "blues".  How do you not keep Charlie filed under "blues"?  Also, my John Mayall records are in their own little section (because I have several of them), but how do you not connect John to the blues?  And the same for Paul Butterfield?

    So again, that question nags at me.  I still think blues is basically a black music genre. But am I able to be as true to that notion as the author of the article linked above?  Evidently I am not.
