Why is it only republicans who say I wish “insert any band or artist” would stick to music and not politics?

Interesting question.  I'm not a republican (and I hope you do get some here who will answer), but I  what eddiec said above pretty much nails it.  I could see some folks here saying, "I wish Ted Nugent would stick to music,"  or maybe Kid Rock or some modern "country" artists, but how many great bands are conservative?

This kind of confirms a theory I have which goes like this:

Creative artistic people tend to either not be great business people or don't have the time to be.  Most highly successful people may have some forms of creativity, but only a small percentage are artistic, especially when it comes to music.  This is why the world is basically run by people who are very good at business, but are generally not great in the creative arts.  This is also why there are so many creative writers, artists, and musicians who struggle to get by.  Out culture generally does not reward creativity.  It rewards assertive, competitive, domineering and aggressive people. Artists are generally not like that.  They often struggle in their work to express themselves as best they can and/ or like to have a good time.  That kind of expression and fun is not well rewarded in our culture.  The exception to that are the mediocre pop bands who are here today, gone tomorrow, and who appeal to the masses and creative highly commercial work.  They are generally far less creative than truly great musicians, but they are more greatly rewarded.

music has words and words have meaning.

one thing that separates Vedder from other rock singers is he writes lyrics with tremendous care, thought and emotion.

Others do, too.  But Eddie does and I would not ask him to cut out “the political stuff” and try to write the Kind of lyrics that I want him to write. He needs to be him to make it good (of course, since I am with him more often than not, this is only an issue in theory).

Using political lyrics is neither right nor wrong. Or, rather, using and not using political lyrics are both right.

Of course, I cannot really answer the original question.  But there’s plenty of apolitical stuff out there for people to consume.

Ah, another thread to highlight and promote unity! None of that us vs. them mentality. I mean, who needs that?

Really though, who gives a shit if someone says that about a musician? It doesn’t affect me or my listening pleasure; does it yours?

If others want to bitch about it, why would anyone else care?

my theory, as with any other situation, republicans want to have their cake but they want to eat it their own way on their terms. they want the music, but they do not want everything that comes with the music. pearl jam, punk bands, etc all are a complete package. you buy their records and their music contains their politics. you go to the show, you get to hear the politics in the form of between song talking.

simple solution is, if you don't like it, don't fucking listen to it, and for god's sake don't go to a show and try to fuck it up for everyone that is there for the whole package.

Because they live deep within their bubble, and anything that goes against what they are used to hearing in the bubble is probably hard to reconcile.  Plus they only say it when the politics aren’t their own.  They don’t say it to Ted Nugent or Kid Rock.  They are alowed to talk politics.  Same with sports.  Kaepernick is supposed to shut up and stick to football, but when Drew Brees made comments this year they were gushing all over him.

It’s a form of oppression.  A lot of why they want to separate it is because they disagree.  Take to the streets and make your voice heard.  Even though your white ass has no reason to feel you have been a victim of social injustice.

Isn’t the reverse equally true? I’ve never been to a Kid Rock or Ted show, but I’m aware of their politics mostly because of all the complaints I hear about it and comments that Ted has apologized for because people were upset. Just like Drew Brees, he gave his point and sure he probably had some people “gushing all over him,” but the backlash was much worse and he apologized for making his statement. Seems what you said applies to almost anyone famous who decides to speak out, some who don’t agree are going to complain.

Have you found the smoking gun yet, linking Greta Thunberg and her mom to terrorism with you falling flat on your face with your BS pictures you posted? Or are you and your friends still looking for it while listening to the rolling stones?

The Rolling Stones frontman said that under Trump's leadership, all kinds of environmental controls are being decimated, at a time when America should be the one setting environmental standards for the world to follow. The 76-year-old star also backed young climate change activists who held a demonstration on the red carpet at the Venice film festival, where 'The Burnt Orange Heresy' - a new psychological thriller he's starring in - made its debut.

My question would be why does anyone care of someone wants a musician to stick to music? So what? Did it ruin your show?
We’re the biggest whiners and entitled, we complain about everything here. Too many cell phones. Not enough energy in the 10c section. Why did my nose bleed ticket cost the same as a floor ticket? Why were some general sales tickets better than my 10c ticket when I’ve been a member for over a year now! The first encore was too slow. The setlist was better at some random city 3 nights ago. I was stuck on stone side. The merch line was too long. They played Even Flow. I almost wonder if anyone even enjoys going to shows anymore. Let the complainers complain, just enjoy it.

There’s a difference between “stick to your job” and “don’t say awful shit”, though.

For the subject at hand, I think  it’s almost universally a reaction from right leaners but it would be dense  to deny that the left would utilize just much if our current atmosphere was flipped. I can’t say I’ve ever seen the left use it without a heavy dose of snark.

I was getting at its no surprise they are political, listen to their music or what they have publicly told us what is important to them over the years.

It’s only rock n roll but I like it is a good fun song, but it’s in an entirely different category when it comes to messaging.
