Mix in some crowd in the boots for the sake of god.

I'm not talking about having a wet blanket of crowd through out like KISS ALIVE II.

But, now even when Eddie has the audience sing parts it's really low. And sometimes pretty much absent. Makes the boots lack punch IMO. Don't see the point. Embrace the crowd.

Also, I think in Comfortable Numb in Krakow they removed handclaps -- and even Eddies handclaps. If I remember it correctly. Which feels like history revisionism to me. WHAT ELSE ARE THEY REMOVING FROM THIS HISTORIC DOCUMENT?!

So yeah, get some crowd singing back into the mix. Especially when Eddie leaves the singing to the crowd(!!).

It doesn't look like ed has his hands micd up, which might explain why you can't hear them

  • True, for example during London I in 2018 the crowd was very intense supporting Ed and that was beautiful, unfortunately the boot (which is great otherwise) doesn’t really reflect that.

I totally agree with this. It's so weird when Eddie says something like, "That's some good singing!" and you actually barely heard any crowd singing whatsoever. But you were there, and know that the crowd was awesome and loud.

I find this all interesting because it is such a modern day thing for crowds to sing along with a band.  I never saw that happen in all the many shows I saw in the 60's through mid 80's.  And then all of the the sudden everyone's a singer.  I'm not going to say it's necessarily a bad thing if that's what people like, but I would not be nearly such a fan of some of my favorite live records if there were crowd singing on them... records like:

    The Who: Live at Leeds
    Jimi Hendrix, Concerts
Dinosaur Jr, Bug: Live at the 9:30 Club
    Ramones:  It's Alive
    Neil Young, any live records.

Yeah agree, it makes it sound like Eddies back-and-forth with the crowd falls flat. And it makes it lack power.

I think you still would be a fan and would today say "I wouldn't be nearly such a fan if they were void of the atmosphere and the sound of them being live!". And do those albums even have back-and-forth etc between the band and the crowd?

Singing along I think also depends a bit on the artist and how the hardcorde fans are cultivated. Didn't see people sing along to Neil Young the last time (except for the odd woman singing just for her self) and at Guns N Roses I only remember some people singing along to Sweet Child O' Mine.

No, those albums don't have performer/ audience back and forth.  When I saw Hendrix, he addressed the crowd a few times and we just kind of stood there in awe with our moths hanging open.  At least I did!

People might sing along with Neil these day, I don't know.  I saw him with Buffalo Springfield in '67(no crowd singing), with CSNY in '69 (no crowd singing) and Crazy Horse in '97 (I didn't hear any crowd singing but I couldn't get tickets so listened to the show from high up in a tree just outside Shoreline, an open-air venue.  Great sound from there by the way!)

Maybe learn how to mic and record the audience properly first. There are many bootlegs where the audience sounds like two separate wind tunnels on left and right channels. Horrible. Keep it mixed down.

  • Make them sound like Reach Down on the Cornell Anthology
looking to hear of the earth
  • I want a whole album of crowd singing...Eddie can do intros and stuff though. It has to be amazing to stand on a stage and hear a stadium full of people singing your music.

Even when I'm there live, I don't care to hear the crowd singing.
But I agree it is even worse when it happens and you can't hear it on the boot. It almost sounds like one of those has-been bands that don't realize no one knows their songs anymore, but I know that isn't the case.
  • I laugh at myself when I hear a song on XM and think - Wow! What version is this? When and where did they play this?!?..then look and see it is the studio version 🤣. Agree with the boots. Nothing beats being able to relive those concerts and feel like you were there again and the crowd takes over singing. It is a balance on the boots of a good audio boot with some crowd.

Im with you on this. When I put on a live album I don't really want to hear the crowd singing the main chorus of a

song(s) I Love . I say skip the whole practice altogether and just sing the songs yourself.

Main reason why I don’t buy the boots.

whole point for me of a bootleg is to feel like I’m at the concert I’m listening to.

Passed few tours the crowd noise sounds muffled and terrible.

if I want to hear the band then I’ll listen to the studio album where the band is that much more on point.

why would I listen to a 2018 version of animal when I rather hear a studio version if I just wanted to hear the band straight up.

Not really a fan of hearing to much audience when listening to boots. If you really want to hear the audience, I'm sure there are plenty of fan recordings, where you can hear them sing and talk during shows... what would be even better if you could get a video of people checking their IG accounts while the show is going on.

my example of the "quiet crowd" is the cville boot from 13. that boot doesnt do that show ANY justice.. incredible setlist with an insane crowd. but you dont get that from the boot.
also to the comments about the sing alongs, imagine your eddie, or grohl, or whoever. to hear 30k people sing YOUR songs back to you has got to be one of the most incredible feelings. its why they do it for betterman, the ourtro to sirens in cville, evenflow. foo fighters with best of you. its a hell of a moment. i can hear the studio version any time. i listen to the boots to relive the moment. how you can NOT belt out every line at a show is beyond me. its a concert, not a movie. and you can see by their reactions that they love the singing too.

But if it's an 'all or none' type thing with crowd noise I'll take none. I don't go to the show to hear people yell stuff at the band...I go to hear the band. Guess I am just old-fashioned that way...
