To Ten Club – Merch suggestion (fellow fans, please add your support)

Dear Ten Club,

I'm sure you're aware of the number of posters, shirts, hats, etc. being sold for exorbitant prices on eBay, immediately after they first go on sale at concerts. Fans have little opportunity to get these items at the shows and wind up paying these unfair eBay prices fattening the wallets of flippers who do nothing but hurt this great community. That money could go direct to the Ten Club, or even better, go to support worthy charities.

To solve this problem, please consider offering posters, setlist shirts and other items for sale online directly to Ten Club members who have purchased tickets through the club for those specific shows. You could even offer these items in a bundle and charge an extra dollar or two for charities.

Thanks for considering!

  • Bump. I agree
  • I get your pain, and suggestions like this have been mentioned a bunch this summer (and the past few years). I get the impression that the management and 10c think the current way is the best option and most logistically feasible. It sucks that shit ends up on ebay. But it also seems like a lot more is getting to real fans hands too.

  • create the sense of "limited edition" and certainly connect with great poster artists and everything will sell out and the band will make buckets and buckets of cash. it's smart of them. bravo to them!!
  • If what is actually important is to make sure that everyone who wants merch gets the merch that they want, and not just change the rules so that only certain people have access to limited edition items, then why not just print more posters, shirts, etc?  Being limited editions should not matter, and if the items aren't limited editions, they won't carry the demand that attracts flippers.  In almost 30 years of selling show posters.... there are only 19 posters available today in the 10club shop.  Pretty much all Pearl Jam posters will sell!  There should be plenty of data by now to let those in control have a good idea of the max number of posters that they could sell per event.

Anything that limits who can buy the merch will attract flippers.  To deter flippers, take away the limitations that create demand.

  • if they make too many, they will make less money at the end of the day as they will have stock left over. not a good business plan to have left over stock on the shelf. create the hype and make it big hype.
  • When you purchase your 10Club tickets, there could be a box to check if you want setlist shirt and/or poster. Just limit it to those two items. They can still sell them at the venues, too.
When the trailers arrive back wherever they’re headquartered, they can sell the remaining stuff in the shop.

Nearly 30 years of show posters, and only 19 are sitting available in the shop.  There is room to sell more, and there is data available to show how many more they could reliably sell.  I'm not willing to pretend that the folks in charge of merch don't have this info available.

So people want to get rid of flippers, AND have limited edition merchandise readily available to all who want it?  I don't think we can have it both ways, that's just now how it works.

Making more wouldn't be a good idea (business wise). As already pointed out, stocking leftover is a waste of time and money for a business, thats why retailers would rather sell Christmas decorations for 75% off that to hold on to them for 9 months and get full value.

But I think a bigger issue is how many people would buy a $35 poster if it wasn't limited? The limited aspect creates a demand that otherwise would not be there. I wouldn't pay $35 for a poster that is readily available, even though I don't plan to resell any of mine. The fewer that are made, the more they sell for. I'm sure they've done their homework and found that printing 5,000 and selling for $35 will bring the most bucks, as opposed to printing 10,000 and selling for $12 with possible leftover stock.

I agree the option to purchase with the ticket would be great. But are the posters even made then? I doubt it, so again many would be hesitant to buy an unseen poster with the risk of getting a "baby brain" poster and the problem hasn't changed.

This system was bad. One worker would say sold out of one item, but the guy 5 feet over had plenty. I don't know if they planned it that way, but it seemed like each individual guy had their own stock supply and would only sell you what was right in front of him. We had to try 3 different people to get a shirt and keychain we wanted. We could see the stack of them, but refused to sell it to us because it wasn't his stack to sell.
  • Agree wholeheartedly with this Idea, but it's also been suggested a million times on here and it's obvious the current System is never going to change. Sad!

EV solo shows you got a wristband for your poster and grabbed in on the way out... those were the days. They had huge stock though so as others said, probably not best for business.

How many of us would know all these artists names and send them website traffic if it weren’t for the constant poster hunt?

For setlist shirts I see no argument. Let us preorder and pick up the next day or have it mailed to us. There is no artist to support.

In almost 30 years of selling show posters.... there are only 19 posters available today in the 10club shop

That's only because they haven't had their mystery poster sale yet.  if they didn't do those, there would be hundreds of posters in the shop, and sitting in a wherehouse taking up space and money.
You won't get my support for this worn out thread any more than any of the others did.  it's just stuff.  it just can't be sooooooo important that it needs this much conversation every day.

Folks loved those mystery box sales!

My only real thought on the whole thing is that if people want limited edition merch, but they want everyone who wants it to have easy access to it without paying flippers... then those people are going to be disappointed.

  • this little sticker makes everything ok.
    It's a hopeless... situation
    And I'm starting to believe
  • When you purchase your 10Club tickets, there could be a box to check if you want setlist shirt and/or poster. Just limit it to those two items. They can still sell them at the venues, too.
When the trailers arrive back wherever they’re headquartered, they can sell the remaining stuff in the shop.
Exactly it’s really not that complicated. They did it in ‘09 with the Spectrum shows. Worked out fine

I’m probably in the minority on this.....but I’m not a fan of 4 or 5 different artists/posters per show.

It would only take 1 tour/year where they offer all merch online right after the tour ends (could do it on and off monthly based on supply and demand, could be delay in shipping) for the flippers to be nervous for a decade in spending $$$ on endless stuff that will sit in their closet at home.  Even setting an expectation right before the tour of "We appreciate that there can sometimes be challenges with our merch situation and will do our very best to offer our highest demand tour items after the tour if possible" or something.   It would set a new precedent.   I mean how great would it be for these same people that do it year after year to get completely burned one year?  What a game changer and life lesson.    I don't think it's the fans making a really solid living that are wasting their time for 9 hours in a great city to stand in line to make $5,000 turn into $10,000 over the course of ebay listings for 3 years vs having beers with fellow jammers and taking in the city.  I'd feel a little bad for them to have thrown away a significant chunk of their income to basically lose it all, but then I would think of the handful of posters that I want on my wall that I can't get my hands on for less than $500 and say screw em...     It would completely change the conversation.    Especially posters, stickers, buttons, etc that are a 1,000% markup for the PJ enterprise + net shipping revenue..    I don't think there are many of us fans that look at the framed posters that are on our wall and primarily think about how much they are worth on Ebay but instead the experience we had if we went to that show/city and/or the great artwork..  am I making sense or just frustrated?  I'm pretty fascinated by the economics behind it all.  It's like if back in the 80s and early 90s baseball cards were only available at the stadiums for those players :)
