Man of the Hour at Fenway

Hello, my name is Marc Young and I’m a longtime fan of Pearl Jam. My father Bob passed away Tuesday so as of now I am going through a very tough time. My mom died in 1987 when I was only 5 and forced my dad to become a single father to a young boy who had a lot of growing up to do. He juggled work, cooking, cleaning and all the other chores that need to be done while also being the sole caregiver to me. I didn’t understand at that young age how much work was involved and all the time and energy needed to do that. Now that I am a father and I have my wife by my side, I can’t imagine how hard it would be if I was by myself. He did EVERYTHING necessary to set me in a path of success. Homework, coaching, studying, teaching me how to be a man, showing me the value of hard work. I am who I am today because of him. He was only aware of Pearl Jam because I grew up blasting their music through my boom box, or pulling into the driveway blasting Yield after getting my drivers license. I’m not sure he was a huge fan but was most def aware of their music through me. I am respectfully asking, if anyone has any connections, if the band could play Man of the Hour at either of the Fenway shows. My dad was my Man of the Hour....day, week, month, year, and lifetime. He will be sorely missed by myself and my family. Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

Marc Young

    Oh man.
Marc I am so sorry to hear.
My Dad passed in 2004 (the day after the Sox won the World Series), and the band had played Man of the Hour a month prior at one of the VFC warm up shows and knowing he was on very borrowed time it was very emotional.

Peace to you and your family, and my sincere condolences.

This song will never be heard the same way by me again. An extremely emotional song now feels as though it was written about my current situation. Is that weird? Ed has such a way to speak through music in such a beautiful way. An unmatched talent. Thanks everyone for all the kind words. They mean more than you know. I hope everyone attending enjoys the Milan shows tonight

    Sorry to read this, Marc.

My phone decided to play the Gorge version while I was driving my son back from the doctor (poor kid had strep) on Father's Day (of all days!!!), and I had to pull over for a while and compose myself before I could get us home safely.

That is to say that you'll most certainly miss him forever, but don't forget that he's still riding shotgun and sometimes can even take the wheel when you need him to.

I'm sure that he was very proud of the man and father that you have become. Take care, and I hope you get the song.

Oh man, today was possibly the hardest day. Watching my 2 kids grieve at their grandfathers wake and funeral was a lot to handle. The reality of this all hasn’t set in just yet. My emotions come in waves and I feel it hasn’t hit in its entirety. I appreciate everyone’s condolences, they have been a wonderful source of comfort to my family and I. The Pearl Jam Community is full of kind hearted people and I am proud to share the love of their music with you all.

I wish it could say it gets easier. Everyone experiences grief differently, but I found that although the initial fog/waves of emotions passed after a few months, there's this lingering void that can never be replaced. Two years' on, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about my father. That is to say that the bond between you and your father will never go away. All those years of memories you shared will live on inside you and will fill you with joy, love, and inspiration. He will always be there with you. Much love and support, Matt

Thanks for that. I find myself trying to think of all the positives and not so much the negatives. I know he's gone, but he gave me so much to remember. Its been hard trying to tie up loose ends. I walk into his house I am flooded with memories. Its a process that I wasn't ready to take on but am dealing with it the best I can. Over time I'm sure it will get easier and even have a lot to smile about. Seeing my kids miss him tears me apart but I am grieving with them and we are trying to talk about all the happy times we had with Papa. It's helping.

Thanks for the support! It’s been a rough couple weeks and it’s been healing to talk and reminisce of the good times. The kids are doing better, talking helps so much. We are doing more of that. Talking about our favorite “Papa-isms” or funny quotes he used to say. Also have been listening to more and more Pearl Jam lately and it has been therapeutic to say the least. Can’t wait to see these guys in September
