BCBA's comment on posters now becoming currency seems to hit the nail on the head.  Maybe I just need to check my own head that I even need anymore Pearl Jam posters, t-shirts, stickers, patches, flags, keychains, pins, or buttons despite their appeal to me.  10C tix are still "will call", so seems to me there can be a similar mechanism in place for merch "will call" - e.g. pickup with tickets (bonus of being able to take back to your car/hotel and prevent damage like rain or whatever) or at a designated booth (choices and payment already made...speedy delivery)?  I guess some of this would be harder to do with third party festivals (e.g. EV at Bourbon and Beyond) with no 10C tix sold, but maybe something there as well.  Not looking to further enable flippers, so tight limits of 1 per may be reasonable...if someone wants more then they queue with everyone else.  There is ample room for the 10C to improve the fan experience...just waiting to see if our voices crying in the wilderness are heard.  Right now I'd settle for news of another album and/or tour, but fingers crossed that someday something can be done with gig merch to improve access beyond the first come first serve flipper friendly method of today.

I'll keep buying posters for the shows I go to.

I'm pretty lucky though.   Vancouver doesn't get a whole lot of 10c'ers going to those shows.   Vancouver '13 had a 30 minute lineup outside which was reasonable.   Pemberton '16 you could only buy them inside and there was no lineup.

It's only when I go to Seattle (and the one time I ventured far and went to Wrigley) that I see the insanity.  Even Seattle's not bad if you just go into the venue when the doors open and buy one inside (assuming you don't have GA tix and want to go straight to the floor).

All in all I'm more than happy to complain about the problem, because it usually means we have more shows to see.

Posters and merch have been crazy for awhile now.  It's not something new.  That niners fan dude was flipping a mad amount of posters back in 2008 on eBay and he was even paying homeless people to wait on line at MSG to get posters for him and circumvent the limits.  People were even posting videos of him back then in the same type of "things are getting out of hand" threads that we have going on right now.

    Sound familiar? http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/113578/kat-sea-10c-can-there-please-be-a-limit-on-buying-merch/p1

Got my Chicago 98 poster after the show, almost as an afterthought. Only 1500 made over 3 shows and I got one after the show, no line. Wrigley 2013 is when I really began hating merch. I waited in line for 6 hours the day before the show and still couldn’t get a poster because everyone in front of me wanted 2 of each. Fast forward to Denver 2014 and the merch line is around the block six hours before showtime, gtfoh. I didn’t wait. I was over it right then and there.
Over the past year I’ve sold 90% of the posters/shirts/records/swag I’ve collected (about to unload another 10 shirts, almost all brand new). It’s only worth something to other PJ fans (literally produced a down payment on my house from sold merch) and I don’t imagine my children keeping all the merch I acquired over the years. I’ve kept 4 posters and a few shirts and keychains. Love the band just as much as before but the collecting obsession is gone. I just want the music, and cooler shirts for my kids!!!!

  • I'm definitely souring on merch due to all that you mentioned etc.  However and with that said - The one thing I'm focusing on when I see things like people fighting at merch booths is posters and other merch bring people together. They cause people to help each other. Whether it's as a poster buddy or someone donating an item for a charity fundraiser etc.  I've seen more examples of good being done to help others with merch involved than bad and I try to remind myself of those examples as it does sadden me to see friendships lost or bad experiences happen because of "stuff".  The feeling I get from helping someone with a merch item or when someone stands in line to secure an item for a charity fundraiser to help a great cause rises above all the bad stuff that happens
This is why I donate and love trading with people!

Likewise. I recall the merch stand in the main foyer had a sizable stack after the concert.

I think the other thing that drives merch lineups (not just the increased interest in merch) are the way people conduct the transactions.   It really became aparent to me last year attending a few shows (tragically hip, gnr, etc... come to mind).   People now want to try on the shirt before buying it, check stuff out, and ask questions.   Most people pay with plastic now which adds significant processing time to the transaction.

I'm still old school.  I walk up ask for an XL tshirt and poster, pay cash, and walk away.  That's the way you did when I was younger and even if a merch line was long it kept it moving.    Not so much any more :(  I've seen lineups way shorter than PJ lineups and they still don't move :(
  • Most of the comments here are right on the nose. It has pretty much gotten out of control. And not just posters. Some 'gentleman' apparently bought nearly every EV Zippo at Ohana and sold them on eBay for what can only be seen as an obscene profit. There are a lot of ways to "fix it" including:
    - Stop collecting
    - Offering pre-sales to ticket holder from the fan club.
    - Print like 10,000 posters for each show.
    - etc.

I don't have "the" answer. Guessing no one does. I will say that some of the greatest fans I have met at the shows I met while waiting in line for a poster or hat. So I will keep waiting for a poster and a sticker while chatting with some genuinely great people while wishing it could be a little less of a time killer.

And to all of you who buy just 2 posters so that you'll have one to trade for some other poster that grabs your attention...?
    God Bless You.

    word.

I understand that PJ and the artists need this micro-economy to some degree to stir up demand.  This is proved by their willingness to make things limited, produce variant prints, multiple prints for shows/events, etc...  The minute the supply of an item is discovered to be past, at, or near demand level.... suddenly nobody wants it.

It has gotten past the point of return IMO.  Personally, I used to purchase nearly everything PJ came out with (until they began to produce more numerous shirt designs)... but everything has gotten saturated.  No desire to wait in line for hours and create stress for these things that have lost a lot of their meaning.  The minute people found the loopholes in flipping, was the minute that it became hyper-competitive and not fun.

Id like to say I am surprised by that letter to Mr. Mumford.  It didn't shock me at all.

The letter is nice - to give priority to those who ended up with a refund is a great thing to do to make up for the website's failures. It was a very gracious response.

I have personally never stood in the merch line up in my entire life, and I don't intend to start. The whole vibe brought by these flippers and by the rabid collectors/traders who are aggressive and competitive is really off-putting to me (I know a lot of collectors are cool, too... I'm not sure I understand why any of them want to keep going for it though. But whatever turns their cranks). I have no interest in being present for that as an observer, let alone being a part of it. It's disheartening, gross, and taints the entire concert/music/fan experience overall.

I agree it was nice (and not required)

I recall Steve Thomas had a hiccup too.  His site oversold and he took a good deal of 'abuse', even while trying to make it right by giving discount codes.

Look at the threads on the first page of this forum.  Count how many are about merch and how many are about music?  The second something is offered for sale that's PJ related there is a thread posted here. Many people are here more for the merch than they are for music.  I'm not condemning... to each their own.  Just making the observation that right now merch is the major focus of this fan club.

Well, I get your point, but there hasn't really been any new music for years now, so I understand why there aren't that many music threads being created these days. At this point they would just be duplicate threads, you know?

While I wouldn't refuse posters of any of the 16 PJ/Ed/TOTD shows I've attended, I am happy with stopping at 3 (one PJ from Indy 2010, one TOTD from LA last Fall, and one Ed from Ohana a couple weeks ago).  From here on out, I'll check out the show specific t-shirts and buy one if it is cool (LOVE my 2013 San Diego t-shirt), and if I don't buy one of those, I'll get a sticker.  You should see the poster lunacy on the 'Official Pearl Jam Ten Club Members' Facebook group page.  Unreal.  And yes, if you're reading this Dayle, I'm talking about you most of all!  :)

  • Hate hate hate the pre-show merch scene now ... especially at big market shows like NYC and Philly. It's been ruined by flippers. I don't know how someone can buy an extra just to flip knowing their basically price gouging the fan standing behind them in line.

The Facebook pages are full of clinically insane people. All of the groups. Thousand dollar raffles, everybody sends that one dude all kinds of free stuff that he calls his "Pearl Jam crap", there seems to a strange God-complex to several of the participants; I unfollowed all of them due to the elitist feel of it all. I've been a huge fan of the band for the last 26 years because I love the music, what the band stands for, etc. Not because they make sweet pins and hoodies. I've never needed a single material good to validate me as/for anything. There was a post on the Facebook where a person received a certain piece of merchandise and the caption to the photo read "I'm finally on the varsity team". That's just weird. But hey, we aren't here forever. Love what you love, I guess.

I have been to 80+ PJ shows since 94. It has gotten out of hand, but I also find some fun in the pursuit. I just was able to get the Columbia 96 poster which was 21 years ago this past weekend. Sure, its expensive now, and the scene is a little crazy at shows, but with the way you get 0 now, your given little choice. You print your tickets for most shows and all you have as a memento is whatever you buy.

I went to Paul McCartney a couple of weeks ago. Printed ticket off stub hub, tried to buy event poster, sold out, so tried to buy the pin (which were from a 1999 wings tour I suppose that never sold out, WTF). Anyway, I got my wife the jean jacket for an obscene amount, and its our memento.

After Chris's passing it has occurred to me I do this to get closer to the experience, the artist, and the music I love. Maybe one day ill find that McCartney poster. Its just a piece of paper, and as my aunt loves to tell me "whoever inherits it will throw it all away anyway."

I only buy posters of shows I've attended. Wrigley '13 and Lexington last year ruined me on merch and posters for good. I got absolutely, lottery ticket level lucky by randomly being online at the exact time they put Wrigley 13' in the shop and ended up being able to purchase the entire set for that show but I've been to 11 shows, including PJ20 and the Lexington show is the only one I've been unable to get a poster for at a reasonable price. If I can get in and get one for the shows I'm at then I will but I absolutely refuse to wait in line for hours.

My biggest complaint is that Ten Club has the power and ability to EASILY fix the problem and they don't....thats what makes me the most angry. I mean if we're being honest here anything would be an improvement on the current situation with tour merch and yet here we are...still bitching and complaining and Ten Club still rakes in the cash.

I mostly try to avoid the outdoor merch tents.  The lines are too crazy.  I find if I line up at the venue about 30 minutes before the doors open I have pretty good luck snagging a poster inside.  Otherwise I'm willing to pay up on eBay if I really like the poster and I missed it at a show because of tailgating or hanging at a restaurant.  Much rather pay up than miss out on hanging with friends.
