I found it very interesting that the only spectrum of light emitted from their star is infrared. I guess that is known knowledge for stars of that type/size, but it was new and interesting info for me :)

Its funny to think if there was intelligent life on that planet and they are observing us, they'd be watching us in 1977 right now.

i completely agree. I will never understand all the money spent on space exploration when that money could be used to clean up our own pigstye. we don't even have the technology to get to these places, so what's the freaking point?

The freaking point is that it's freaking fascinating.

It doesn't all have to be about exploitation.

space exploration has lead to many technology advancements, some save lives.
Anything that uses satellites wouldn't exist if we didn't care to go into space.
And what would Eddie have named track #7 on Uke Songs without it?

but don't you think that's where it's eventually going to lead? if we can't learn how not to fuck up this planet, we aren't ready for another one.

I agree that it's fascinating. As much as I hate how much money is spent on it, I read up all about it and watch the shows, so I guess maybe I'm a bit of a hypocrite in that sense.

The purposes of space exploration are more than just "it's cool." Discovering new stars, planetary systems, satellites, comets, constellations, clusters, dust clouds, etc can all give us information on how our own planet was formed. How our solar system will behave, etc. We can use it to predict events, whether small or cataclysmic. Information that may not be mechanically or physically applicable today, but 200-300 years down the road it might be common to vacation on the moon and beyond. And another 2000 years down the road, who knows what's possible (should we live that long). But the more we learn now, the more we can do later.

I'd much rather my tax money go to NASA than the trillions we spend annually on wars and conflict.
