Other Half in Carroll Gardens is a good brewery to visit. You can also have a pint or two at Bar Great Harry after.

Alewife, Fool's Gold, and The Jeffery are a trio of sister bars that have great craft beer as well.

I thought they closed the statue of liberty to tourists? You used to be able to climb up into the crown but I think they stopped that due to security concerns and now you can just go hang out at the little museum or whatever. Better off just taking the ferry really.

  • For those who like to walk the city with a beer in hand...the old beer in a paper bag trick hasn't worked in years. Almost every store in the city has a cooler full of cold ones. After purchasing said cold one...ask the clerk for the largest coffee cup they have... fill cup...secure lid, pop the top and off you go.

ah. hadn't heard that it was re-opened.

I've been to the One World Observatory (I got pre-opening tickets on special offer cuz I'm awesome) I'd recommend going on a clear day. I've never gone to the Empire State or Top of the Rock observations decks. (I was born here.)

This is Governors Island. I've never been, and it doesn't re-open until the end of May, but I know people who go regularly with their kids during the summer. It's supposedly really nice, and this year they're opening up another section. If you're going to be in NYC at any point during the summer, maybe check it out. (It's not going to be open during the MSG shows, this is just a bit of info on the side.)

My wife and I are coming in for the day from Connecticut. We could take the train or drive in. Does anyone have a recommendation? We haven't been to the city very many times.

Take the train, definitely. Easy-peesy and no traffic jams, no parking issues.
Thanks. Please forgive my ignorance but it looks like MSG is about a mile from Grand Central Station. Is there a subway from the station to MSG?

    Thanks for the help.
This is basically my commute every day, I live in the NY burbs, get into Grand Central, and walk to work, which is right near Penn Station. It's an easy 20 min walk, and easy to avoid Times Square. On rainy days I just take the shuttle and then you have a whole lot of trains to pick to get you right to MSG. But it's a pleasant walk! And you pass not 1 but 2 Wafels & Dinges stands (my fav dessert to get in the city! :) )

Also there's a really fun bar called Pioneers on 29th bet 6th&7th that I'll sometimes go to after work/before or after a show. Free popcorn, life sized jenga, life sized connect four! Fun stuff. That's one of my favorite places in the area.

  • Is it feasible to park walking distance to MSG on May 2nd? I'm just a redneck from upstate (3 hours away) and would like to drive in and drive home. Time doesn't matter but it might be nice to get there early to check out some other stuff around MSG. I see parking garages in the area but don't know if it is possible to get into them. Cost doesn't really matter.

The parking garages are expensive but if you're good with the prices and you get down early enough you'll be fine. They always have event pricing, which just means inflated.

You could also look around 10th ave, we have been lucky enough to find street parking there a few times. Just pay attention to the signs for where and what time you're allowed to park without paying the meters.

Lol...I got hit with an open container ticket going to a an Audioslave show a few years back. The plain clothes cop had some kid in cuffs sitting on the sidewalk cursing his head off. The cop was like..."do you want to end up like this kid"?!? I was like..."can I finish my beer?"...he said...."you better... my partner is across the street".

The ticket required a court appearance at like 9:00 am in midtown a few weeks later. I decided not to go to court and take my chances. That night I got home and there was a letter from NYC police in my mail....this ticket has been expunged...whew!

    Be careful out there kids.

What's a good pizza place to hit up that's near the Garden? I'm staying right near there and only for the night so I won't have much time to go far.

take the subway or a $15 cab 30 blocks south to Little Italy and hit up Lombardi's and then Ferrara's for expresso and an Isabelle. It is so worth the short trip. And then you can check out Bleecker street and some cool vinyl shops in soho

Just keep in mind that anyplace within a few blocks of MSG will charge a higher "event" rate.

  • For beer connoissuers check out

    Brooklyn Brewery.
    LIC beer
    Finback Brewery
    Rockaway Brewing

If you are on Long Island check out Barrier Brewing in Oceanside.

Most pizza in the city is just "OK". May be good for the out of towners but it isn't the best. Travel outside into Brooklyn and the bronx for that.

I second the LI suggestion - Barrier is by far the best brewery on LI and such a cool spot to go tasting (nearby Rockville Centre is actually a place fans could consider staying that would be WAY cheaper than NYC and only a 35 minute train on the LIRR - where you can drink your fresh growler of Barrier "Money IPA" and get dropped off right underneath MSG...!

I would also add SingleCut in Astoria for my favorite NYC/Queens brewery. For those sticking to the big city, a great spot (not a brewery, but a craft beer bar) really close to MSG is the new Rattle N' Hum West (the original is great too, but a little bit of a crowded cluster-F near the bar area). The new one has the same world-class selection, great food and lots of space (I went before the Bruce show last month). Here is their site: http://www.rattlenhumbarnyc.com/RattleNHumWest

Another parking tip for anyone interested..... I live about 10 blocks south of MSG in Chelsea. It's a residential neighborhood primarily (lots of brownstones/apt buildings). There's street parking between 8th and 9th ave, 9th and 10th ave. on say 18-22nd street and you can park there and walk up to MSG (about a 15 minute walk) if you didn't want to pay for a garage. It's safe and you can leave your car for the night without having to get it out of garage. Just an fyi.

    A couple of questions...

I'll be there with my son (13) if we go for lunch/dinner to a pub can he enter (of course he doesn't drink alcohol) or are there any limitations?

I smoke cigars (Toscani : ) ... is it possible to smoke while in the streets? are there any limitations (e.g.: parks, certain buildings, oth.?)

Last question: what about best steaks in NYC? and hamburgers?

    Thanks!!!!!

I think generally no for lunch, but for dinner especially on the late side, you should probably call ahead before you trek anywhere. Plus there are some bars that tend to be more bar than restaurant so you'd probably not want your son to be around the drunks anyway!

You're not supposed to smoke in city parks. I think smoking on the street is fair game. No smoking in any outdoor area attached to a food establishment, including bars.

Will let others more knowledgeable comment further, but Peter Luger's is the name that comes up the most for steak in NYC. Others: Keens, Del Frisco's
