A "No Hits" PJ tour

freecandy44freecandy44 Pittsburghish Posts: 90
I know we all have our fav songs that we just have to hear live (rvm dte etc) but how would you guys feel about a 25 song set list of rare or "non hit" songs? Or maybe a "No TEN tour".

I would go for it in a smaller venue with a majority in the fan club. Otherwise the crowd would be lost and it would suck.
  • yeah, I don´t see it happening, other than in a special show only for 10c members....

05 and 08 were pretty damn close to that.

And I think at 3 hours plus a show these days, there's something for everyone!

Completely unrealistic for multiple reasons. But with that being said I would love it personally. A lot of my favorite PJ songs are not the hits. I also feel some of their most creative songs are not the hits and again that's my favorite PJ

I saw them in '92 and 90% of the setlist was Ten, so stop complaining.

Nope; wouldn't like it. There are a ton of "hit" Pearl Jam songs that, regardless of their status or how overplayed they might be for some people, are very meaningful to me personally. I wouldn't want to miss out on those live.

Hit songs are hits because they are songs people like.

this. with the added caveat that it be an additional show, either before or after the regularly scheduled large venue show

  • Hell yeah! I would love to see 'em play a show with a set-list that focused primarily on tunes in their catalog from "Vs." thru "Riot Act" (including "Lost Dogs:" esp. "Sad," "Alone," and "Undone"). So much great stuff on those records that doesn't (or rarely) get(s) played live. I may not love every song they put out, but I can honestly say that I love every album -- all of 'em! Having said that, if I could pick the set-list, it would focus mostly on the music from the albums and time frame listed above. "Ten" is obviously an amazing and iconic record. It's what started it all for me (and many others I'm sure) back in '91. I think "Backspacer" and "Lightening Bolt" are great records too. But personally, the music produced from "Vs." thru "Riot Act" would be what I'd be most interested in hearing live. The shows I've seen most recently are, in my opinion, too "Ten" and "new album" (i.e. "Backspacer" and "Lightening Bolt") heavy. Of course that makes perfect sense; they're going to play songs in support of their latest release and play stuff from "Ten" because those tunes are their biggest hits and best known songs. I get it, and that's fine; count me in. Just sayin' that I'd love to hear 'em play more of the gems they dropped between the "old" stuff and the "new" stuff. I'd be fine with fewer covers too.

I see this happening in a small venue type setting.

While it would be great to hear a ton of the less-played stuff in one shot, half the experience for me at a Pearl Jam show is the crowd energy and I think a setlist full of obscure songs will sap the energy out of the crowd.

Sounds like the Orpheum show following the two Boston Garden shows in 1994.

  • The iron maiden forums have this same debate every now and again, while it would be good for the hardcore fans, they have to also play for the kid who's seeing them for the first time. while most of us here have seen them a fair few times (I assume) could you imagine what your first show would have been like without these songs? Would you have fallen in love with the band if you didn't have the hits that drew you to the band?

The fastest and easiest way to kill crowd energy, interest, and involvement in a sold out arena is to play unknown, brand new, obscure songs that 90% of the audience has no clue what's being played.
  • freecandy44freecandy44 Pittsburghish Posts: 90
I seem to have struck a nerve, it really wasnt meant to be taken that way. I just think it would be fun to hear the lesser known songs now and then. No Code through Riot Act espically...

Would look a lot like this...

    THE VIC THEATRE
    CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
    Thu 2 August, 2007

    Trouble
    Dead Man Walking
I Used to Work In Chicago
    All The Way

    Down
    Undone
    Off He Goes
    Hard To Imagine
    Gods' Dice
    World Wide Suicide
    Rats
    Gone
    Why Go

    No More
    Inside Job
    Low Light
    Love Reign O'er Me

    Comatose
    Black Diamond
    Sonic Reducer

    Indifference

It would be a fun little club show tour for some, but they couldn't do an arena tour like that. I prefer the slower songs, so this would work for me, but I personally feel with the big crowds that the energy that a song like Alive brings to the venue is something I don't want to lose.
words seem so out of place.

I compare this to the last two Rush tours. On the Clockwork tour they played some deep cuts. I'd say 75% of the crowd were bored out of their minds which led to a boring show. I have friends who saw Rush for the first time on that tour and they hated it and will never go back.

It's too bad because their last tour was one of their best and it had plenty of crowd favorites.

This band feeds off the crowd so I say play Even Flow as much as you want.

The deep, dark secret of Pearl Jam's brilliance is that Even Flow is effing awesome. Look into your hearts, you know it to be true.

Underrated version. Unplugged "SOLAT" is even better.

I wish they would just play the 1st half at normal speed because that groove in the studio version is wicked and then speed it up during the solo. Same with Given to Fly, studio speed is 100X better than when they play it as fast as possible. Live on 2 Legs version and 2000 Europe shows versions are my favorite.

Lol, I would have loved to have seen those shows. As far as complaining goes, that's the status quo around here.
