What setlist staple would you give a break?

Of course, all the diehards are suggesting that we drop all the "hits" and play a bunch of b-sides that the casual fan has never heard. That's why Ed writes the setlists and you morons flip burgers or whatever. A show where none of those (Even Flow, Better Man, Elderly Woman, Jeremy, Daughter, etc) is played would absolutely suck for the fan at his or her first or second show. Dumb.

Pretty sure I don't flip burgers and the question was posed as to what Id like to see dropped. Of course that is a subjective answer. Dumb would be not understanding that.

    Just saying.

Took me nine shows to get Jeremy. Whether it was by luck or design, I've never experienced it as a setlist staple. Crazy Mary gets my vote. When I heard it in 2000, it blew my mind. Since, I've heard at 5 of the last 7 shows I've attended. I've since grown bored with it.

First off, I meant this to be a discussion. Nothing more, nothing less. Second, I understand what you're driving at, and I don't deny it (except for the moron and flipping burgers part, that's simply uncalled for). At my first show, I got to hear all the hits except for a few, which happened to include a great version of Even Flow. Also, I never suggested to eliminate all the hits from every show ever, but I'm sure people have at least one or two songs that they feel that have been driven into the ground. This wasn't meant as a dig to the guys, I love the band as much as I ever have, but a little bit of critique isn't gonna do any harm.

Even Flow, RVM, Daughter, most of Riot Act, some of Binaural, and a good chunk of Backspacer. It saddens me when I hear songs tuned down 1/2 a step (this is geared towards Backspacer).

If you're going to your first PJ show in 2013 you should probably understand if you don't get to hear some songs that are from 1991. Not like people haven't had their chances.

Even Flow, it is okay to play it every other show, instead of every show

You gotta play each show like it's someone's first time ever, and somebody's last time....

But Comatose could go just fine....

And I haven't heard Crazy Mary live in seven years, and have been kind of missing it. I think this illustrates the difficulty of this question.

I love the staples. At the end of the day, even flow, alive, etc. are what got alot of us into the band to begin, so I always love hearing those ones.

With that being said, I could go a long time without hearing RITFW again. And if I had to pick a PJ song to cut, it would be Small Town, without a doubt. I feel like the band gets more bored with the song each time they play it.

I longed to hear Small Town when I first saw them live and started going to shows (back in '98/2000) . . . .but I have since seen it many times. . . .now it is played too often and I could go without it . . .

Again, most people answering this thread have seen the band multiple times. Think about somebody seeing them for the first time ever. You HAVE to play things like Even Flow, Better Man, Alive etc. to appease them. They don't want to sit through 2.5 hours of B-sides and rarities...

Betterman could definitely be shelved for a tour. But, for some reason I never get sick of Alive and Even Flow (mainly for the solo).

This one is easy for me. I'd give Yellow Ledbetter a break. The best song for them to close with is Indifference....

    - Uncle Snuffy

I agree with this but it kills me when Indifference is played with all the house lights on, I feel it takes away a lot of the emotion of the song

It's kind of funny. For the first 10 years or so of my Pearl Jamming career, Yellow Ledbetter was our white whale. It was so rarely played. And so awesome. It took me until 2003 to finally hear it live.

I don't think it should go away completely. But it doesn't need to close every show. Or even most of them.

  • Even Flow, heard it every time I've seen them. Kinda torn on it cause its such a great energy generator for the crowd.

    I'd love some Fatal.

I'll take Wishlist played at every single show ever. It can be the new Evenflow for all I care. Hell, play it twice a night. So there. ;)

    Do.The.Evolution.

It sounds tired. I'd like it more if was slowed down like the earlier performances with Jack I.

The play it too fast, like a lot of their older rockers. The groove is important there.

Wouldn't mind if they missed out Alive every once in awhile.

If that's too much to ask, then Elderly Woman or Daughter.

I would say Yellow Ledbetter too..But I wished they played Porch 20 times a show though.
Dreams feel real while we're in them. It's only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.

any of the less played lost dogs would be great to see show up every once and again: fatal, otherside, in the moonlight, education, black red yellow, hitchhiker...
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...

But maybe a new group of 4-5 covers that they can use for each tour? That would require less rehearsal time, and would add a fresh twist

They used to do this. I liked it.

PLEASE, If you insist on adding covers to the setlist, please play the Rolling Stones "LOVING CUP".
In my opinion, for what its worth, it would be a PERFECT fit not only for the Eddie/Mick lyrics - but the entire band can groove this tune.
In fact, I'd love to see McCready show his chops off on this tune. Recently I saw a video of Jack White playing this with the Stones - and in an epiphany like state - thought to myself - "NOW THIS IS A COVER PJ SHOULD WHIP OUT".

Anyone agree, or like the tune?

RITFW (preferably a permanent break), and Better Man, and DTE.
