I could go without Daughter or Small Town.

Yeah, Daughter ... although, it is my piss break song. And usually they tag something cool onto it which really blows when you miss the ending.

It has been a static song, slotted at the same time, nearly every show for 4 years.

I say give a break to nothing. If a "staple" has been seen so many times that it's deemed tiresome/old/boring, time to take a break from live shows. Come back after a few years off and it'll all seem new again.

    Encore break 2

I mean, why not just push through and finish the show at that point?

I would definitely give Wishlist a break. It's not that I don't love the song, I just don't ever get excited about hearing it live and I never have. It's just not one of those beautiful PJ songs that I get emotional when it's played.

And as for it's replacement, I think Red Mosquito should take it's place. Honestly, how had that song NOT made it to being a staple???

I've only seen the band twice but both times they've played Lukin. Never liked the song.

This is a bit broad and unfair IMO.

If people dont really like Backspacer, do they need to give up their whole PJ collection and listening? Are people not allowed to go to shows and "hope" to see a song or 2?

To me, Just Breathe is a predictable, and slow portion of a PJ show. To me it almost feels like a 7th Inning stretch and my ears 'go through the motions'. It doesnt mean that the other 96% of the show isnt immensely satisfying. I like Just Breathe, Ill listen to it on Backspacer and boots. hell, it was my wedding song.

I still can't get into this song. I think the meaning behind it is beautiful, but it just seems so out of place.

  • I say replace the current version of Even Flow with the classic version of Even Flow at half the speed.
Other than that, replace Small Town with Glorified G, Daughter with Sometimes or Who You Are, and I'm good.
Oh wait, more Grievance too, however they want to swing it.

Not true. I took PJ20 off and Even Flow still didn't come back all sparkly and new in London. Not saying they should never play these songs again, or they're not great song, but it's inevitable that a song will lose some vibrancy after listening to it (for me) for 21 years. Also, in the world of PJ where they're willing to pull any song out of their hat, the ones you basically know going in that they're going to play become considerably less exciting.

This is such a tough question. In general, staples are staples for a reason. They're good fucking songs that you want to hear.

    BUT ...

Sometimes I get the feeling the band plays some of them every night or almost every night out of obligation. The result is a series of half-assed versions of really good songs that I'd just as soon do without every now and then.

Rearviewmirror used to be one of my favorite songs on the planet. Easy. Yet I haven't heard a really good, locked-in live version in ages. I skip it on boots now. Same with Do The Evolution, which for the longest time was my favorite song off my favorite album.

Maybe give those kind of songs a break for a little while -- not forever, maybe not even for the whole tour -- and maybe they come back with some freshness.

Leave Evenflow alone. Mike needs his solo time. (although I too would be cool with a more classic version that was SLOWED THE FUCK DOWN).

I totally agree with this comment. The band speeds up the tempo when playing live and sometimes moreso than others. Sometimes gives the impression they are trying to just blaze through and get a high number of songs done. Sometimes you got to stand back and ask if that even sounds good at the fast pace. For example, Severed Hand suffers from this. Songs need to be savored and enjoyed. I agree with Jeff that Evenflow is overly sped up.

I could go without Daughter or Small Town

These are the only two songs out of their entire catalouge that bore me at a show, so I would be okay with missing them

No, but I think the song is new enough to still not be boring. I'd prefer it be played less, but not taken out of rotation.

  • Of course, all the diehards are suggesting that we drop all the "hits" and play a bunch of b-sides that the casual fan has never heard. That's why Ed writes the setlists and you morons flip burgers or whatever. A show where none of those (Even Flow, Better Man, Elderly Woman, Jeremy, Daughter, etc) is played would absolutely suck for the fan at his or her first or second show. Dumb.

All of the covers that have been played to death for 20 years. It would be cool if they played one cover per show and made it something different every show. But of course that would require some rehearsal which they seem to not be interested in doing.

This I can agree with a little. Not necessarily a unique cover at every show, because then people would bitch because they didnt get the one they wanted. But maybe a new group of 4-5 covers that they can use for each tour? That would require less rehearsal time, and would add a fresh twist
