can anyone tell me in la if this is a close drive? i been to la 2x, i think it less than 10 miles from each other? is this drive ok to take a few hours before the show, or is the traffic very bad and take a long time to get from one place to another? just wondering because commerce casino has a very nice hotel in it that is not ridiculous price, id rather stay there than what other people say to stay downtown, but is the drive ok from commerce to la sports arena?

The drive isn't bad. About 25 minutes without traffic. Could be an hour with traffic.

I would suggest you stay closer to downtown.

The Commerce Casino Crowne Plaza is a really nice hotel, I've stayed there a few time before. But, don't stay there unless you have a car, or a friend that can drive you around. They have a shuttle that will take you to Union Station in downtown LA, but that's not even close to the Sports Arena. A taxi is at least $50 each way.

For sure, you should have a car. The City of Commerce isn't a tourist destination. You can tell by its name. A lot of train tracks, warehouses, manufacturing, trucks, etc. Interstate 5 runs right through it. Commerce is east of downtown LA and the Sports Arena is 3 miles south of downtown. About 12 miles apart. With average traffic, probably 20-30 minutes:

1.Start out going southeast on Telegraph Rd toward S Tubeway Ave.0.1 mi
2.Merge onto I-5 N toward Los Angeles. If you reach E Washington Blvd you've gone about 0.2 miles too far 4.1 mi
    3.Keep right to take I-5 N toward Sacramento/Santa Monica. 0.3 mi
    4.Merge onto I-10 W via EXIT 134A toward Santa Monica.3.6 mi
    5.Merge onto I-110 S toward San Pedro.2.5 mi
6.Take the Martin Luther King Jr BL exit, EXIT 20A, toward Coliseum.0.2 mi
7.Turn right onto W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.0.07 mi
8.Take the 1st right onto S Figueroa St.Tom Junior Burgers is on the right
If you reach S Hoover St you've gone about 0.2 miles too far0.03 mi
9.3939 S FIGUEROA ST is on the left.If you reach Expostion Park you've gone about 0.1 miles too far

Depends what your plans are while you are in town. Its not extremely far. There are a lot of people that live near there that are driving to the shows so its not like you are staying somewhere that's way out you know? Some out of owners even stay at the hotel by the citadel which is close to there too. Just don't expect to walk anywhere.

The Sports Arena is on the same grounds as the Coliseum where USC plays football. It's not as bad as people make it out to be (or maybe just not to me since I'm a native). There are some nice hotels on the LA Live campus and around it in the heart of downtown. LA Live is the area across from Staples Center which is 2.5-3 miles straight up Figueroa from the Sports Arena.

The Commerce Casino is a couple exits up the 5 freeway from me. On a good day, I can get to the Sports Arena in 20-30 minutes. Not sure what cab rates would work out to but there'll be traffic heading into LA. It's the opening weekend of the LA Auto Show and there's just traffic going anywhere in LA really. Would definitely stay closer if you're planning on cabbing it.

In heavy traffic, this estimator gives a rate of around $40 each way:

Sports Arena is on the north end of "south-central". As you go south and east, it gets worse. The area is somewhat of an island in not the best area. The Sports Arena is connected to the Coliseum. Just across the lawn to the north, the California Science center and Natural history museum. To the north of that, the LA rose garden. Across Exposition to the north is USC. I would call all of what I just described to be an island. Outside the perimeter, I'd generally say it is safe at daytime, be cautious at night. North of there is Staples/LA-Live, and then downtown.

As for the really rough areas, I'd say they are south and east. For example, between the 710 and 110 freeways, along Century and Imperial Highway. For example, I would only take Imperial Highway between the 710 and 110 if I were in that modified car they use in "Storm Chasers". If you've been across the GW Bridge from Jersey into Bronx, that area to the South and East is like that.
