This song, to me anyway, definitely sounds like it belongs on Backspacer. Definitely not much progression from the last batch of songs on this particular track. Unless the studio version is more full and interesting, it's in the "bummer" category.
I think the song is like the child of Who you are and Unthought Known.
I agree the song sounds like Back-spacerish. I dont say it as a bad thing, I love Backspacer. It is promising that there is more playing and jamming and Mike solo in the song.
What's your part, who you are?

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I don't think this tune is overly Backspacer-ish. Same goes for the other tunes. MYM has a much sharper edge than anything from BS. Future Days does seem to follow the same formula as Just Breathe, but the same could be said for alot of tunes in their catalog.
The thing with Backspacer....By trying to simplify things, they dumbed them down. From what I hear with this one, it sounds simple enough, but there's also plenty of stuff to keep it more interesting.
That outro with Stone and Mike is bitchin...It's like Porch mixed with Undone.
Took me a few listens before I could pay attention to the song enough to get an opinion so far.
It just doesn't grab me. I find it somewhat boring and uninspired.
Not that it's a bad song, just not a great song.
Still holding final judgement till I give the whole album a spin, the studio version and context within the album could change my mind.

"Come take my hand, and let yourself rely.
Don't hold your breath, don't close your eyes.
I've learned to breath and I've learned to fly.
I've learned to see and I know I'm going higher."
All of the members side projects have been so much more creative than anything the band has churned out for the last 10 years, look at Moonlander! Goodness thats a great record. MYM was promising but these latest two are right back to square one. I think they need to trust their audience a little more, remember the no code/binaural/riot act days!?
The intro sounds a little Neil Diamond-esque to me, but once it kicks in its pretty good. Hope its not overly polished on the record. After a while Unthought Known (studio) started to sound a little too sweet.
Also part of it reminds me a little of "cheated hearts" by the Yeah Yeah yeahs...anyone else hear that?
Looking forward to hearing this song properly on the new album

Anyone else think there's a touch of AC/DC leading to the chorus? The song is all over the place but it sounds pretty good. I get the Backspacer comparison because Lightning Bolt builds a lot like Unthought Known and Future Days is the sandwich filler between Just Breathe and The End. I don't mind Backspacer but even if there are similarities this time around I think this will be a heavier album. Looking forward to finding out though...

MYM had me excited. These two new ones has brought back the sceptic in me. I really want to like this new record! I need new pearl jam music that I can wrap my mind around and send me places. I haven't been able to do that since Binaural.
PJ and I have grown in different directions. Pearl Jam has made some of the best music I know. They gave me gold and diamonds in the 90's. That music will always be extremely valuable to me. These two new songs doesn't do anything to bring back some of the pearl jam feelings I have been in search of the last 10+ years. Eddie sounds great, Mike plays great and so on, but that helps little when the songwriting to me is pale and uninteresting.
That said, I am looking forward to hear the album as a whole. Hope there is something for me there.
superb song. definitely a 'backspacer / unthought known / amongst the waves' with a bit of 'given to fly 'vibe to it. love the mcgready jam
...Pearl Jam, a group filled with pride, passion, and intricate musicianship. Their music is full of subtle textures, rich color, soul-searching power, imagery, and eerie dissonance.
"All the places where you would naturally go up to perk up a song or create a dynamic, he would almost consciously take it down and add tension. He'd avoid the obvious. It's less spoon-fed and less appealing at first, but you listen and go, 'Wow, there's a lot of dignity in that vocal."
"We try to do that as a band, take the less traveled route," he continues. "With 'Light Years,' Mike McCready had written some music. We were excited about it for a while, but when we got down to recording it, it was too nice, too right there - it was a little too close to 'Given to Fly.' We changed the tempos, and then one night Mike and I, after working on it all day and getting frustrated, just flipped it backwards, and in about 35 minutes it became 'Light Years,' with words and everything. It still has a fairly contagious chorus and melody, but it's just sideways enough to make me happy.""

- uninspiring; trite; and grossly devoid of pattern or rhythm-
these guys are pros....they know, and can do sooooo much better
they've proved they can

But it sorts of has a groove that I found Backspacer to be lacking. And MYM also had sort of a groove with the drum beat and all.
So maybe PJ got their groove back for this album.
I think Lightning Bolt will sound great on the album.
