Who's down for some new covers?

Don't get me wrong, nothing is better than a good Baba O'Riley towards the end of the show. But it's more so Rockin' In The Free World. Both of these songs are great, but I feel they've been playing them both for almost 20 years in concert. I say it's time to go to originals or throw in some different covers to spice things up. Anyone else?

They recently started covering mother by pink Floyd.

Fortunate son was played last year in Montana :)

    Mother was refreshing.

But they hadn't played Fortunate Son forever before then :(

Fortunate son is from 2003 period.
I am happy with mother but I say enough to covers. A band with more than 160 songs does not need new covers, for me.

I would be happy if they stopped playing covers now as they've been heavy on them for 20 years. They have so many great songs that don't or seldom get played, in fact here's an entire set list of them.... :)

    Main:
    Oceans
    Breakerfall
    Whipping
    Ghost
    Tremor Christ
    Nothing As It Seems
    Help, Help
    Deep
    Light Years
    Faithful
    I Got Shit
    Garden
    Breath
    Rival
    Rats
    Sleight Of Hand
    Get Right
    Blood

    Enc 1:
    Of The Girl
    In My Tree
    The End
    Parachutes
    Gone
    Parting Ways

    Enc 2:
    You Are
    Dissident

I couldn't agree more. With so many great songs rarely played, I would rather hear these.

That would be the greatest setlist ever. They really have been playing it safe over the last few years. 2003 and 2008 and 2009 were all great years for variety in the setlists. Here's hoping for an interesting tour with a return to variation.

Drop Parachutes from that and it's an amazing setlist.

Absolutely love this veddertown, but the only songs missing are All Or None and Hard To Imagine. ;)

I think it's probably fun for the band too, to throw in some new covers.
There are some that I really love, especially in tag form such as Daughter/It's OK, Betterman/Save it for later and Not for you/Modern Girl.

I loved being able to hear two great songs such as Mother and Love Reign o'er me, performed by my favorite band. And Baba and Rockin' are two great show closers (prior to Yellow Ledbetter).

Oh and Crown of Thorns... they can play that whenever they want. 8-)

I would love to hear Cortez the killer, and especially I would love a comeback of Masters of War (brilliant)

Can you write the next setlist? That is brilliant. Just replace "Parachutes" with "All or None" and add Hard to Imagine and Crown of Thorns somewhere in there, and it is brilliant. ;) 8-)

Yeah, I must agree with that weak choice. Maybe All Or None, All Those Yesterdays, Wash, Hard To Imagine, Around The Bend, Man Of The Hour, Fatal, Thin Air, Alone, Who You Are, Love Boat Captain, Leatherman, Grievance, Sad, Smile, etc.... which really emphasises the lack of need for covers or overplaying too many of the same songs at almost every show. As long as I never hear Love Reign O'er Me or Baba O Riley I'll always go home happy... ;)

I say ditch the covers. The Who and Neil Young stuff is usually pretty great, but alot of the other stuff is hit or miss. Little Wing and Mother being particularly lousy.

I kinda agree and disagree. I wouldn't want them to completely stop playing covers. But as far as the this thread goes, I don't need any new ones. Stuff like Sonic Reducer and Fuckin' Up are Pearl Jam songs now as far I'm concerned so keep them. The Who and Neil Young stuff is always good like you said. And one-off covers like Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love or If You Want Blood (You've Got It) are cool because of the surprise factor. But yeah I don't need any new covers. All the band has produced musically over the past SEVEN years is the eleven Backspacer songs. They need to worry about making their own music rather than learning Iggy Pop songs or whatever.

Yeah, I was kinda going with 2 extremes I guess. Either more covers or no covers. I mostly like the stuff that has been around pretty much forever or the ones that they've done studio covers. Alot of the one offs are cool along with the stuff that got spot play, like Fortunate Son and Gimme Some Truth.

I think the problem with alot of the recent covers that have put into rotation is how little they seemingly work on them, which falls in line with your argument about 11 songs in 7 years. On paper Mother and Little Wing should be epic, but they just don't deliver. I think it's laughable when people recommend them doing certain Zeppelin or Rush. It doesn't seem like the attention to detail is there to do something like that justice.
