Yeah. He was great. Underutilized in pearl jam. I kept thinking how great it would be to see pearl jam in that building.

It's something I have a hard time comprehending.
His drumming in soundgarden is upfront in their music, it's tribal at times, sharp, cutting with lots of Tom Tom drumbeats.
If you listen to any of the PJ 1998 boots, it shows you the massive potential of pearl jan songs performed with Matt's soundgarden drumming approach.
And then over the years he somehow decided to "mute" his drumming style to be more in the background of pearl jam.
    Not sure why?
I miss the snap, crash and spin of 1998.
The fact that he can turn it back on in an instant with the soundgarden reunion shows me its an intentional underplay with pearl jam.

I agree with this statement 100%. He's their best drummer, they just don't use him. And it seems like his snare drum is a dull thud since he switched to yamaha, it's not much differnt sounding then his toms. He switched for "Riot Act". They are 2 different bands so I understand. It's why I prefer "Puzzles and Games" as opposed to "Light Years". His drumming is fantastic in that demo, and dull and boring in "Light Years". Just my opinion though. Live he kills it. Great Great drummer.

He is great with soundgarden. And the '98 tour did show huge potential. Live on 2 legs proves that. But I haven't liked his drumming since 2000. I will say I'm not a drummer and I don't like to get into the drummer debate. Just my opinion. (I expect a lot of tongue lashings. Lol)

Was there last night too. On the ride home all of us talked about his drumming and how awesome it was to watch him. He was on fire.

    +1 on Matt is AMAZING

& +1 on his drumming being very different with SG vs PJ but I have enough respect in his creativity that he's happy with how it is at the moment. :)
