Thoughts and Prayers with Steve Gleason, former NFL player, huge Pearl Jam fan. 34 years old and battling ALS. Ugh.

Today was a good day, he posted a photo of him and his newborn son with the tag line "...I am myself, like you somehow....": http://twitter.com/#!/team_gleason

Here is a good read about Gleason situation:

PJ Excerpts:

The 14,000-mile trek ended in equally epic fashion at Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary show in East Troy, Wis., where Mike McCready invited him on stage to play tambourine during the encore.

The trip taxed the Gleasons physically and mentally. But both deemed it an overwhelming success.

"People ask all of the time, 'How does it feel?' " Gleason said. "I think about Pearl Jam. I know Mike (McCready). We kind of go back a little bit, but if I wasn't diagnosed with this, he probably wouldn't say, 'Hey come on stage.' Part of me was like, 'This is sweet.' And then another part of me is like, 'Well, that kind of sucked.' "

I went to school with him at Washington State. Not only an excellent football and baseball player, he was simply a great person. Not that I wish ALS upon anyone, but Steve is one of the last guys that deserves this.

Introduced myself to Gleason last night to tell him I was also at PJ20 and asked him how awesome it was to be on stage. He really seemed to light up when he spoke about the band. He said they sent him an autographed copy of the PJ20 book for his birthday, and he had nothing but great things to say bout Mike and the band.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

Steve is still rockin' it hard, bless him!
And I betcha Mikey would have still brought him up on stage anyway...he's a local hero! haha
  • I just watched the latest Real Sports on HBO tonight with Steve Gleason update. It's been almost a year and Steve went from being up on stage with the band to full time in a wheel-chair. I cannot think of a more horrible disease and it demonstrates how we need to live and enjoy each minute. I am lucky enough to have three children and watching this was really emotional (it really does put life into perspective).

I donated to the cause and here is the website if you want more information or would like to make a donation.
