Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

At her peak in the 1980s and `90s, Houston the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world's best-selling artists.

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like "The Bodyguard."

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

they showed her leaving a club the other night and she had been partying. they said she was bloody and bruised, but she seemed happy. her hair was really messy like she sweated.

liked her in the movie the bodyguard with kevin costner.

    CNN just confirmed it also.

    Sad.
The thing I like most about time is that it's not real. It's all in the head. Sure, it's a useful trick to use if you want to meet someone at a specific place in the universe and have tea or coffee- but that's all it is- a trick. There is no such thing as the past. It exists only in the memory. There is no such thing as the future. It exists only in our imagination. If our watches were truly accurate, the only thing they would ever say is "Now". That's what time it is. It's "Now". - Damien Echols

It's not really a surprise, but sad.

    May she rest in peace.

although this was more or less forseeable, that damn crack, doesn't negate the fact that the world lost a beautiful woman and a beautiful voice today.

And I'm not a fan...but I do recognize her talent, and this is a damn tragedy.

    Her poor daughter, and family.

    RIP Whitney

all death sucks, but I'll never understand why a junkie celebrity's death is deemed more of a tragedy than a "normal" person's.

to me that's a sad state of our society.

    Not for me.

Her death was a reminder of my homeless brother, and it will be more or less likely the same fate for him. My entire family prepares for the bad news, yet we try to hang on to a morsel of hope.

Just found him after not hearing from him for about 4 months. But I do prepare myself for very similar news.

He aint no celebrity. He's my brother. This just all hits too close to home. Sigh.

It's tragic whether its a celebrity, your neighbour, your brother.

    Indeed to both statements.

Wasn't she seen at one point taking drugs with her daughter? I think I read that once.I hope her daughter's fate doesn't go the same way.

So sad, she's one of those people/artists who have always been around, at least for me. It's hard to believe she's gone, and at 48, around the same age as my Mum. :(

I'm not really sure where you are coming from........I think an addict's death is perhaps more tragic because it is seen as being more preventable than people who say die of disease, or accidents etc.

If you're referring to the press coverage of her death (the sad state of society?), it's kind of to be expected, this is one of the biggest selling artists of all time, she sold something like 200 million records, so naturally people care. Her fall from grace is a truly sad story. She was unquestionably one of the greatest vocalists the world has ever heard, and she lost everything to addiction. I don't think it's any sadder that she has passed away than it is when any 'normal' person does - but it's certainly more newsworthy.
