They always do such a great job with covers, I almost always enjoy PJs covers of songs better than the originals, "Mother" now adds to this list of many songs

They do have a lot of great covers! I would love for them to release a covers album one day.

Totally agree...I don't think I would've ever got to know "Sitting on the dock of the bay" if they hadn't covered it. Now, it's my favorite, along with "Reign O'er me". I'm probably adding "Mother" to this list :)

Holy shit. You people are making me feel really fucking old.

Never heard of Mother, Dock of the Bay, Fuckin' Up, Love, Reign O'er Me, The Real Me, etc.?

But the reason you're not familiar with them is because radio these days is shite -- pure shite.

I loved their version of Mother, I wouldn't call it better than the original though. It's all a matter of taste though, but to me that song just isn't the same without Roger Waters' voice. But if Roger isn't going to be singing it, then Ed would be my first choice as a replacement.

  • I'm just glad no one mentioned Last Kiss. I remember the original version from when I was a wee young lad. Hard to believe no one ever heard the originals of most of the covers PJ does. Crazy Mary is another one that they covered and made their own.

I don't even notice people saying they had never heard those songs, I thought they just said they liked PJ's versions better. How does somebody not hear Mother, or any Who tracks from Quadrophenia until just recently?

They make the songs sound great because they are master musicians. They play the music of others better then they do (most of the time).

Easy example is when they play with Uncle Neil on Rocking in the Free World. It musically sounds amazingly perfect.

Heh. I just looked at my list and I put "Fuckin' Up" on there. I'm pretty sure that would not have ever been in heavy rotation on any radio station during any era. Aside from PJ covering it, I'm pretty sure the only time I've heard it is when I've played my copy of Ragged Glory.

    My bad.
  • Awesome cover. You've got to give Pearl Jam real credit when it comes to choosing their covers. I really hope this gets played in South America. While it isn't as good as the Floyd original, it certainly stands up well on its own.

Agreed. No one can touch or reproduce the greatness of the original on this song but Eddie and the boys did a great rendition just the same.

The thing I love most about them doing covers....For the most part, they just "cover" it...They stay very true to the original as more of a tribute to said band...They seem to not mess with the arrangements much...they repsect the song/artist....To me, that is the highest compliment to the cover and they just make them sound so freaking good..... :-)

They start by being huge fans of the bands they cover. It helps that they are good musicians too. Then, throw in the passion and that's about it  My interest in bands have expanded due to PJ. It used to be pretty limited. Another reason I'm so thankful to be a PJ fan!
  • they are amazing musician, know to respect other artist..they work hard...they love what they doing

and as for mother cover,,i post this a few days ago cos i saw live the falon show..
    ..they record mother 3 times..kinda 2.5..
and before the 3rd time i realise why this band is there for 20 years..you should see how they talk about if need to play it once more...Ed ask Stone which part to get to the song,Stone plays that part,Mike talking with Matt for the solo and then they all turn to Jeff and ask him what he thinks about do it one more time, like its your call...amazing..those guys are a team,a family..

Mother was amazing last night. I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan (yep...old enough to know the original) and I have to say...this was outstanding. PJ didn't try to copy the song but made it their own...as usual. Different from PF and therefore as much of a favorite to me as the original.

Love the idea of a cover album coming out. This would make a great opener! :D

That is cool you were there and got to see that - I think it speaks to why they cover things so well.

So many great (and some just plain fun) covers over the years....

I love it when they do covers! I have to admit that I didn't know Baba O'Riley until I heard PJ do it. But I wasn't a Who fan when I was younger. My early music experience was country like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, Sr. from my parents, disco (yeah not so god) from my oldester brother and then hip hop.. I didn't get into rock music until the mid 90's unfortunately.
  • I would love it if they would release a covers album!

Mother last night was so awesome, and any covers I have ever heard them do have sounded as good as the originals if not better.

I particularly enjoy the Springsteen covers and the Petty ones too... :)

What's wrong with Last Kiss?! Their spin on it is great. Is it because of the commercial success it generated?!
