Corduroy for me. I like it as the second or third song, so hearing it as an opener just knocks a true opener off the setlist.

Edit: I think Unthought Known is a very poor opener too, but I haven't actually heard it live.

I'm not a huge fan of them playing anything but a traditional opener.

Unless however it is some other rare type of song.

But any of the staples just take away another rare/unique song that could be played in that spot.

With that said, Why Go as an opener really gets things going. But they get going no matter what.... so.

Why go was a opener in Berlin 2009 and what a start of the show, all the energy at the beginning is f'''king great.

Although its not standard opener and I have never not liked an opening song..I thought wash was a poor choice for alpine 2. I know they dont play it..blah blah blah...but it just didnt do it for me. Aside from realease, long road, and sometimes, I would have preferered something a little faster and louder!!!

Small Town as an opener doesn't do much for me... but those shows have proven to usually have pretty good setlists.

Not looking to blame..I dont mind the song (well its just ok) thought it would have been better in encore. The opening song should set a mood..wash makes me picture dirty puddles!! hahahahh

The openers I have seen are Release, Hard To Imagine, Of The Girl, Unthought Known and Small Town. Of those, Unthought Known was by far the worst. Disappointing because it is a song you know you will get later in the set and it did not really fire up the crowd. If I was to rank them:

    Release
    Of The Girl
Small Town (Blew the Montreal crowd UP!)
    Hard To Imagine
    Unthought Known

Unthought Known and Small Town didn't work for me at all.

Given To Fly was also an odd choice in Hamilton that didn't translate all that well as an opener but was better than Unthought and Small Town...

I really wish that they would stick to the typical openers. Release, Oceans, Wash, Of The Girl, Hard To Imagine.

All or None was an AMAZING opener at the Vic. They should do that one more.

I also think that Sleight of Hand would make a great opener.

I think it's only been done once, New Orleans 2010. To me a mid-tempo Byrds cover is not the way to start a show, or get the crowd going.

Any song thats a 'staple' later in the show is a bummer for me, but its not because the song is bad but just because you're giving up any chance of the 'normal' openers since they don't do those later on.

That said Go @ Toronto 2 was one of the best openers I've ever seen - it just felt awesome to have that open. Of course Go has become a 'rarer' song so maybe that helped.

I definitely think Small Town is the worst opener I've seen though just because its not fast so it doesnt get the crowd pumped, and its not a traditional opener and just felt out of place. It wasn't BAD... just my least favorite.

    +1

It was a great choice and I'd already seen it before so I my greediness was hopin for something else. Love the mellow opener into the super rocker. I thought The Fixer was a little weak for the #2 slot.

I've never caught Corduroy as an opener without Interstellar, but I love the way it kicks of Lo2L, especially the harmonics before the actual tune.

wow...i understand that cordoruy and why go arent the openers we expect but they still get us raring to go - i heard those open in Hartford 2010 and one of the spectrum shows i think

i personally dont think ive disliked any opener...except when i heard severed hand open 3 out of the 4 shows i saw in 2006 - i did get wash tho at camden II :D

I think a great opener would be NAIS. They did it once in 2000 and have yet to do it again. To me, it worked really well for that show. Also, Who You Are is a great way to open a show IMO. My personal list is as follows for openers (mind you, they are all very close in ranking):

    Long Road
    Oceans
    Release
    Hard to Imagine
    Can't Keep
    Who You Are
    Of the Girl

Get the torches and pitchforks ready...

    Release.

But only because I know I'm going to be picking up the bootleg and I already have a lot of bootlegs with it as the opener.
