The Bsides Are Better

Pearl Jam's b-side songs are better than their a-side songs,...for me anyway. I just realized it today,...if I take all my favorites on the studio albums and compare them to my favorites on Lost Dogs and other b-sides not on Lost Dogs I find that I feel the b-sides are stronger.

Songs like Wash, Sad, Hard To Imagine, Strangest Tribe, Leatherman, Long Road, I Got Shit, U, Down etc....man I'll take those over the hit singles and the best songs on the albums anyday. Edit...and who could forget, Breath.

    You like Leatherman?
  • Yes I do. Leatherman is the SHIT, especially live.....the TB2K version comes to mind. Something about the energy and vibe of the song....makes me want to dance and I don't dance. McCready spinning around while he's playing doesn't hurt.

I like all of the bsides you listed as well but I think if you put those songs on Ten instead of the tracks that are actually on it, not only would we have never gotten to PJ20 there wouldn't have been a PJ1. Just my opinion.
  • Ive been saying for years that if they compiled the best b-sides into a CD, it would be their best. It could easily be a double disc too.

Bah. If all those were A songs and the B songs were Black, Alive, Rearviewmirror, Betterman (or whatever you consider to the "hit singles") ... you'd be talking about how great THOSE B sides were.

This could be a bad assumption, but you've probably heard the A sides 10x more than the B sides. Back in the day you were probably more likely to take the Yield CD with you somewhere than the Given To Fly CD. You hear a song 10x more times than another song and it is going to get dull.

People say there is no right or wrong answer with music, but I don't believe that. Given to Fly is a much better song than Leatherman hands down, and if 2 out of 100 disagree, then they are just wrong (opinions don't matter when there is such a consensus).

    This.

And I like Leatherman. It's perfectly suited to be a B-side.

If Leatherman were on Yield I would like Yield just as much as I do now. Maybe even more so.

    #8

but what i meant was just add it to the tracklisting and it would be 14 tracks. 15 if you count Hummus.

I mean you could add Hard to Imagine to Yield and it would make it better as well. And replacing 8 with any song is kind of unfair.

Pearl Jam has more B-Side HITS than most bands have hits their whole career. Come to think of it they may have more Non-released songs than most bands have all togeather

Its one of the reasons I fell in love with the band :D
Some words when spoken...Can't be taken back...
  • it's a well known fact that Eddie refused to release most of those songs on the albums as he didn't want the mainstream attention anymore. some of those songs would have ended up on the radio, and he didn't want that.

most fans I talk to like Lost Dogs more than their mid to late 90's albums, because those songs SHOULD have been those albums.

I personally wouldn't change anything, except the garbage tracks on Vitalogy. And Mankind.

seeing as wash ledbetter and dirty frank are my 1 2 and 3 favorite songs it is tempting to agree with you but in the end the albums have way more to offer than the b sides
