The LOVE Of The Band RUSH

Yes I know many on here cannot stand the band 2gif, however many others including my nerdy self love them and the chick lead singer. D

Rush-007jpg

2gif: *Our Fans Feel Vindicated*
Rush, and Rush fans, are long used to being the butt of the joke – kimono-wearing, book-learning, heavily moustachioed Canadian prog-rock overlords never seemed likely to be at the cutting edge of cool. But what's really interesting is how their fan archetype – that nerdy, computer-club, Dungeons and Dragons-playing, comic-reading, sci-fi geek – has moved from the margins right into the very heart of the mainstream. Rush have been uncool for so long that they are, finally, perhaps the coolest band in the world.

"We've been vindicated!" laughs guitarist Alex Lifeson down the phone from his home in Toronto a few days later. "A lot of fans feel vindicated, too. There is a segment of our audience that are outsiders and some have grown into power and influence, but that bond they feel to us is still there. It's very, very deep and I don't think it's like that for a lot of other bands."

The same could be said in the case of Pearl Jam in that they also have their legion of fans and outsiders. The bond PJ and their fans have is super strong and the same can and is said about 2gif and their fans it's only going on 40 years now. Never been on the cover of Rolling Stone or in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and they will never need either one of those so called status positions. I hope they never get it in the RARHOF they sure don't need it.

So LOVE em or HATE em they are STILL a great band touring and STILL recording some 30+ years later. Still a classic album.....2112...
Instead the band locked everyone out and wrote 2112, an album whose entire first side was taken up by a concept piece about a brutally dystopian future in which a group of elite priests exert total control over the meek and mediocre: excellence and individualism have been traded in for a numb, cowardly security. One man finds an old guitar, is fascinated by the sounds it makes and begs the priests to let the people make their own music. They respond by crushing the guitar beneath their feet. A voice at the track's end intones: "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: we have assumed control."

The sleevenotes offered thanks to the rightwing novelist Ayn Rand, while critics also detected nods to Dostoevsky and Nietzsche. Peart's ultra-libertarian stance was construed by the NME, never one to shy away from a ludicrous argument, as being dangerously close to Nazism, despite Rand – and Lee – being Jewish. "I believe in the sanctity of the individual," Peart said later. "In freedom of action without harming anyone else." While this debate raged on, in England at least, Rush displayed their desire for individual freedom on 2112's sleeve where they were pictured wearing silk kimonos, in what they admit in Beyond the Lighted Stage was an attempt to have an image, any image. As a young fan I found that picture a far more powerful message and, to this day, I've never met a Rush fan who ever gave two hoots for Rand or objectivism, but I know plenty for whom Rush's brilliantly openhearted, unafraid ludicrousness was just as much of a draw as their staggering technical aptitude.

Rush is a great Band. Have been listening to them for years. The musicianship these three bring to the table is absolutely off the charts. Seeing them in June. Moving Pictures played in it's entirety.....can't wait!!

It depends on what albums you already have and what you've already heard. I could give you a few to give a try, if you would like.

I used to love them but I don't really listen to them anymore. I happen to prefer their newer work than their classic stuff just because its more modern.

What does FS mean and I have that very same album on vynil? I love that album but to me Exit Stage Left is much better......La Villa Strangiato is awesome with Alex's solo.

That's a damn good question that's why the RARHOF is such a joke but since they are NOT I hope they never get in. I think they'll become famous for that. They do have a star on the Hoolywood walk of fame....is that what it's called?

Yet Donna Summers and some rap artist are now in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame.

Neil Peart did an interview on our local radio a few years back and was asked about the RRHOF and said it doesn't matter because they play in front of sold out venues on a nightly basis, to paraphrase him.

I'm a Rush fan and have seen them live twice in the last couple of years. Both were excellent shows! Have the documentary and 2 of their concert performances (Rush in Rio and Snakes and Arrows Blu Ray). These 3 guys are really excellent musicians. Even though I'm a fan, I haven't heard all of their albums. Do you have any recommendations on which one I should try to listen to next?

I have/heard: 2112, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Roll the Bones, Snakes and Arrows, and the Caravan/BU2B single.

If you haven't heard them already you can't go wrong with Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, and "side 1" of 2112. I'm also a big fan of their snakes and arrows album.

Just saw them live again for the first time in 20 years the other night, and am so glad i did!! Was quickly reminded of their musical brilliance and timeless energy, playing and rocking hard a solid 3 hr setlist that bands together half as long wouldn't even attempt......i may be partial being Canadian, but having been to many, many concerts, i've found few bands cover the spectrum or demographic that RUSH does.....aside from being an excellent live band, they relate to fans both young and old by just giving them what they want, with NO EGO!!!! If you have yet to see them live, i say do so on this tour if possible, watching Mr. Peart, a true master of his craft at work, is worth the price of admission alone......:clap::clap:

i've only heard the stuff they play on the radio (tom sawyer, freewill (I think thats the name of that song), limelight, etc..), snakes and arrows, and part of moving pictures.

also watched the new documentary and thought it was pretty cool, it's made me want to hear more.

the spirit of radio=one of the greatest songs ever

They are bands that come up with classic songs and lyrics...in fact just about every band has one. To me this is the ONE for RUSH even more than Tom Sawyer....Limelight is also another song that is a classic but not as much as SOR.

The words here are just perfect....

    Begin the day
    Wth a friendly voice,
    A companion, unobtrusive
Plays the song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood.

    Off on your way
    Hit the open road,
There is magic at your fingers
    For the Spirit ever lingers,
Undemanding contact In your happy solitude.

    Invisible airwaves
    Crackle with life
    Bright antennae bristle
    With the energy
    Emotional feedback
    On a timeless wavelength
    Bearing a gift beyond price-
    Almost free...

    All this machinery
    Making modern music
    Can still be open-hearted
    Not so coldly charted
    It's really just a question
    Of your honesty

    One likes to believe
    In the freedom of music,
    But glittering prizes
    And endless compromises
    Shatter the illusion
    Of integrity.

"For the words of the profits,
Are written on the studio wall,
    Concert hall -
    Echoes with the sounds...
    Of salesmen."

I was about to post this exact statement. The lyrics ring so true, I don't even think they could have imagined how corrupt the music industry would become when they wrote it. One of the 10 greatest songs ever written by any band in my opinion.

I love love love Rush. My first concert was Rush at the Gorge, and it is still one of my favorite music memories. I'm liking most of the new stuff, but Presto and Roll the Bones will always hold a special place for me. Not to mention I blast down the road at 80mph whenever Red Barchetta comes on the radio  For fans of Rush, I always recommend Neil Peart's Ghost Rider, his book detailing life after the loss of his daughter and wife. Great read!

  • I've only seen Rush twice: both times in 2002 on Vapour Trails tour-in MSG and the Fleet Centre in Boston. Both great shows. I am going to see their very first Irish show ever next month. Really looking forward to it. My friend just got me the 2 new songs on a 7 inch on Record Store Day-was it a RSD release?

They're not playing my favourite Rush song this tour, but that's OK, because I heard it in 2002. The mighty Distant Early Warning.

Love Rush, as I have said many times!! :D

Was really into them before PJ took over. I admit....have not really stayed up to date with them so am more into their older stuff. The Trees, Subdivisions, New World Man, Red Barchetta are some of my faves.

The other day, someone was asking me how they are still selling out arenas when a few other bands from the 70s/80s are lucky to be playing hotel bars. I think its because they never tried to conform to any trends and they just make the music they want to make. And, because of that, their fans never left. They are fantastic musicians and are still great in concert (i first caught them in '78)
