i just think the JTE version captures the feeling of the song so much better than the original. i absolutely love the cover version. it blows the original away.

cover :you just can't win (dead weather)
    Original: Them

The original is good too, but Dead weather really made this amazing. JW did change the lyrics a little though.

    Definitely, amazing version by NIN.

I have to go with Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends"
  • Best by a mile is:

White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself.

    Honourable mentions:

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World.

Isaac Hayes - The Look of Love (for the ridiculously good guitar solo)
It's gonna be a glorious day...

    Totally.

I'm also going to go out on a limb here and confess something:

I love, love, love Manfred Mann's "Blinded By The Light" (that guitar solo is fucking ace)...I think it completely eclipses Springsteen's version. Sorry Bruce, but it had to be said.

I must strongly disagree with you there. Whilst undoubtedly a fantastic cover, some of the live versions NIN have done are incredible, my favourite being this one:

    absolutely spine-chilling stuff.

    From PlanetRock.com:
Kinks' Dave Davies On Van Halen Cover
    26th July 2010

The Kinks’ Dave Davies has given a rare interview to Classic Rock Magazine, and in the interview he has laid into Van Halen’s famous cover of ‘You Really Got Me.’

In the interview with CRM’s Rob Hughes he said:

“Van Halen’s version was very Middle America. It was like, ‘Hey man, look at me with my tight trousers! Here’s our version of You Really Got Me!’

“There’s the thing: good art isn’t always about having the comfiest technique. I shouldn’t encourage him, but I’m sure Eddie Van Halen played better when he was drunk. But it must be a good record if people like it.

“We got pissed off though, when we played America. The Kinks had an album out called Low Budget [1979] and we ended up touring and playing stadiums. Some kid came up to me after one of the gigs and said: ‘I like your cover of Van Halen’s You Really Got Me.’ You have to smile sometimes.”

Van Halen’s version of the Kinks classic appeared on their 1978 debut album.

DMB - Sweet Caroline (well, maybe not)
    Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide
    Johnny Cash - Hurt
Sarah Maclachlan/Barenaked Ladies - Star of Wonder (or whatever it's called)
Eric Clapton - Layla (2nd version is better)
Foo Fighters - (Acoustic Everlong is better)
Boys of Summer (Atari's version is cool)

Here's a bunch of others, some I agree with (8-10 for starters).

I've always loved Sonic Youth's version of Superstar. It is so haunting in a way The Carpenters sugar-sweet pop could never be.

styles ranged quite a bit. We played everything from Classic Rock to PJ to cheezy 80s music. I guess you could consider us at the time hard rock in the way we covered some songs. We even brought out some nice ballads as well. Whatever we felt like playing really. Oh we stayed away from metal for the most part as my voice couldn't handle it or I couldn't get high enough for some stuff.
