I'm always on the lookout, roaming around the internet for bands not many folks have heard of outside their area and I'm sure lots of us do that. I've come across some really good bands/aritsts by chance.
Most recently I found Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights. Their album Pardon Me was released earlier this year and is a cool brand of bluesy rock for the most part.

So, what other bands not many folks might know do you guys like? Local favorites, up-and-comers etc....

I'm sure you already know this, but they are opening for JJ Grey & Mofro on their upcoming tour. They also opened for them last time they came through my city. Didn't get there in time to see them, but I have heard great things.

Cool and no I did not know that! Are they playing on all the dates because I will be seeing JJ in October? That would be bad ass to see Tyler and JJ at one time

Well he's not from my neck of the woods but he's certainly falls under most's radar. I have been really into Admiral Freebe lately. I bought the self titled album about a month or so ago and I love it. He's great song-writer. Can't get to youtube from work for any clips but here's his myspace.

  • I really like Kovacs and the Polar Bear. They are a local band in Asheville, NC. I just saw them play about two weeks ago and they were awesome. :)

    Cool. Keep em coming.
Listening to Admiral Freebee now, pretty good stuff.

More folks may be aware of this band, but I only heard of Marah about a month ago when they opened for the Drive-by Truckers...man they put on one hell of a show. If you get the chance to see them don't skip it even if you don't them. I didn't I had a blast. They have a very Springsteen-ish quality but also a style of their own.

Well I like Sons of Sylvia but want to add
I just noticed credit score.com is using unknown bands on their commercials now.
Remember the, some thought slightly annoying, group of guys singing, stuck in the car, singing at the Renaissance Fair, singing as waiters at the seafood joint, now I've seen 3 different unknown bands, quite good, rocking out for the commercials instead. It says their band name at the start. I thought that was kind of cool for them.

Sons of Sylvia has done some stuff with Carrie Underwood, right? THink they were on her last album and they went on tour with her. Cole thinks the sun rises and sets on Carrie as I think i've mentioned before. How does their stuff sound? It's not glossy, silly new Nashville is it? :D

I actually liked those little songs they sang on their commericals. You have to admit they were pretty catchy. But yes, cool for them to plug some lesser known bands instead.

I'm absolutely loving this Australian band Dead Letter Circus at the moment, maybe a bit too commercial for some, but I'm sure a lot of people would dig them. The singer has a really unique voice, reminds me at times of Maynard James Keenan, but a bit higher. The album is really soild, lots of really catchy stuff on there. Anyway here's a link:

    they are pretty fantastic

The most unknown that comes to mind for me is The Weeks. I posted about them a while back and got little or no response. Figured this was a good time to give them another mention. The song "Buttons" is probably the most accessible: http://www.myspace.com/theweeks
Have also loved Alberta Cross since I saw them open for Ben Harper, although I recognize they're a little more well-known by now.

I think Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are worthy of a mention here.
New self-titled is awesome as was their previous...plus Grace is HOT as hell
Hoping to be able to check them out in September...having missed a show a couple of months ago

Another band that comes to mind is Band of Skulls. I'm really oblivious as to thier popularity but they're worthy of checking out. You can hear some Jack White influence in some of their tunes. http://bandofskulls.com/

I've been listening to Chase Fifty Six this morning....album called Alltoona Rising and I'm loving it.
Music is very much akin to the Driveby Truckers (Lucero as well) in my opinion. Definitely worth checking out.
The d-bag on the blog I found it on says he "can hear some Eddie Vedder in a track like “Let it Go,” which is awesome. I generally hate that guy (Vedder) and all of the pomp and circumstance that comes with him, but this song rips."
I suppose you might be able to hear some Ed in there, but I don't really get that...
Nevertheless....you can hear some of the tunes there
