When you feel down, like all hope is lost, like things couldnt get any worse, what albums or songs do you put on to pull you out of that bleak hole?

What music instantly puts a smile on your face, and evokes feelings of joy, happiness and of being alive?

    Jane's Addiction
    "Summertime Rolls"

    Fell into
    A sea of grass
    And disappeared among
    The shady blades...
    Children all
    Ran over me
    Screaming tag!
    You are the one!

    He trips her as
    Her sandals fail
    She says stop!
    I'm a girl...
    Whose fingernails are made
    Of mother's pearl...

    Yellow buttercup
    Helicopters
    Orange buttercat
    Chasing after
    The crazy bee
    Mad about somebody...

    Me and my girlfriend
    Don't wear no shoes
    Her nose is painted pepper
    Sunlight...
    She loves me
    I mean it's serious
    As serious can be...

    She sings a song and
I listen to what it says:
    If you want a friend
    Feed any animal...
    There was so much space
    I cut me a piece
    With some fine wine
It brought peace to my mind
    In the summertime...
    And it rolled

    Summer.... oh...
    Oh.... the summertime rolls

The Shins always bring a smile to my face, all three albums have some great 'happy' sounding tunes but the one that comes to mind immediately is Australia. Best vibe video ever.

Also the Lemonheads, Weezer, Ben Folds, Polyphonic Spree, Flaming Lips, The Strokes, Ani Difranco, Wilco, Band of Horses, the Beatles, the Fruit Bats, Fountains of Wayne...all these have some beautiful, sunshiny day songs that can put you in the best mood but most still have the more heavy tunes sprinkled in their albums, too.

    Michael Franti and Spearhead...*SOMETIMES*

    (chorus)
Sometimes, i feel like i can do anything
    Sometimes i'm so alive...so alive
Sometimes, i feel like i can swim ‘cross the sky
    Sometimes, i wanna cry

Most people try to aim to please
But a lot of them are kinda weak at the knees
Learnin' late about the birds and the bees
Fallin' in love and wanna be set free
Playin' ball at the age of thirteen
Everybody's growin' up with a dream
I never noticed what could happen to me
Time flies when your walkin' the streets
One minute gotcha holdin' an ace
The next minute gotcha fall on yer face
A mean city is a nasty place
Only a rat can win a rat race!
Peace to the people who be fallin' away
    To make it home today
And peace to the people who be tryin' to find
    Some kinda life
    (chorus)

Sound body and sound of mind
Sound of the rhythm and sound of the rhyme
Somebody marchin' out all of the time
Biggest mistakes are the humanest kind
Judge not, lest you be judged
The court room or the billy club
    Blood bubblin' thick than mud
    The heart beat rub-a-dub-dub
Show love and love who you know
    Family wherever you go
    Tokyo to acapulco
    Bravissimo, magnifico
Peace to the people who be losin' their head
Peace to the people who be needin' a bed
Love to the people who be feelin' alone
    Spreadin' love upon the microphone
Hope to the people to be feelin' down
Smile to the people who be wearin' a frown
Faith to the people who be seekin' the truth y'all
All of the time, and i say
    (chorus)

.....And many of his other songs and albums

    Peace

I've been on a traditional pop kick lately (overflowing melodies, multi-layered vocals, tight song structures). I've been listening to The Beach Boys including Brian Wilson's 'Smile' album, Queen, Electric Light Orchestra, The Zombies and Beatles. A lot of their songs have gorgeous melodies that seem upbeat and happy.

Grateful Dead (nothing beats the sound of a '72 show on a warm summer day, or the warm feeling of an '89 show while driving and relaxing).

Obi-la-di, Ob-la-da is also a favorite. For some reason, whenever it comes on, I get a smile on my face and feel a lot better. Same goes with Here Comes The Sun & Drive My Car.

I like some Old School like this number by Sly & The Family Stones...Everyday People

Sometimes I'm right then I can be wrong
My own beliefs are in my songs
A butcher, a banker, a drummer and then
Makes no difference what group I'm in
    I am everyday people

There is a blue one who can't accept
The green one for living with
a black ones tryin' to be a skinny one
    Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and scooby dooby dooby

    Ooh sha sha
    We gotta live together

I am no better and neither are you
We're all the same whatever we do
You love me you hate me
    You know me and then
Still can't figure out the bag I'm in
    I am everyday people

    There is a new man
That doesn't like the short man
For being such a rich one
That will not help the poor one
    Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on scooby dooby dooby

    Ooh sha sha
    We got to live together

There is a yellow one that won't
    Accept the black one
That won't accept the red one
That won't accept the white one

    Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and
    Scooby dooby dooby
    Ooh sha sha
    I am everyday people

Pretty much anything by Steely Dan can bring me out of the foulest of moods. Also "Easy" (Faith No More version) always does the trick.

The dude who said PJ's Down, I totally agree! That song makes me feel good and positive everytime I blast it.

Other songs that put me in a good mood or gimme a shot of confidence for whatever reason:

Glen Philips' "Finally Fading" (none of his live versions on youtube do it justice. You have to hear the studio version)

    Wilco's "Theologians"

    *Redemption Song*....by Bob Marley

    Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
    Minutes after they took I
    From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty.
    We forward in this generation
    Triumphantly.
    Won't you help to sing
    These songs of freedom?
    'Cause all I ever have:
    Redemption songs,
    Redemption songs.

    Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfill the Book.

    Won't you help to sing
    These songs of freedom?
    'Cause all I ever have:
    Redemption songs,
    Redemption songs,
    Redemption songs.
    ---
    /Guitar break/
    ---
    Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfill the book.
    Won't you have to sing
    These songs of freedom? -
    'Cause all I ever had:
    Redemption songs -
    All I ever had:
    Redemption songs:
    These songs of freedom,
    Songs of freedom.
