Well I'm going to be fulfilling a life long dream and driving to the west coast in a couple weeks. I'll be in Seattle for a few days then down the coast. I recently finished grad school and want to examine the different cities out west before considering new job options. I'll be doing plenty of camping, roughing it on this trip. Anyone from Seattle, Portland, San Fran have any tips on places to camp, cool things to check out, cool bars to chill at? I'm going to see everything from Yellowstone to LA, but Im most excited about Seattle so any tips on what to do there are much appreciated!! I do know that I'm staying at a place called the College Inn which is in University circle or something like that...
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

Sounds like you may like bigger cities, but you would be robbing yourself the pleasure if you didn't stop in Missoula, have a beer and food at Charlie b's on Higgins Ave, and forget bout Yellowstone, and check out Glacier Natl Park- it will blow your mind! Safe travels!

If you travel through Spokane, WA on your way to Seattle, drop me a pm and if the timing is right, you can swing in and be the first out of town visitor to The Pearl Jam House! :D;)

    GMoney,

I should definitely be your SF Contact. I'd be happy to give you the run down of the town I got here. And I am the site manager of a city guide website so I have a pretty good finger on the pulse of the city at all times. Not only that...I could probably put you up for a night if you don't mind listening to the waves crashing on the beach and the slow lull of the fog horn protecting the Golden Gate Bridge as you snooze in a blissful west coast PJam pad.

    Holler at your hero.

i had a great day in Seattle after a weekend at the gorge...i think it was 2001. great city to visit as are many of the others likely to be on your itinerary. a bit of advice though...have a great time and don't any opportunity pass you by. if the chance is available, you should consider taking a look at any job options out there. the way of life seems to be lot better pace compared to anything on the east (even though you're really more central than east).

    just my two cents.

oh, and don't try any random drugs just cause the cool kids are doin em

I think Glacier is way better than Yellowstone, yeah. I mean, both places have lots of tourons, but Glacier is simply unbelievable, and the nice thing that is in a day hike from your car, you can really get back into it, while with Yellowstone, the views that are in magazines are only attained through extended backpacking. Yeah, you can car camp, or get a backcountry permit if you are feeling adventourous. Check out the website. Yellowstone is cool for looking at bison and other wildlife, and the geysers are cool, but glacier is unlike anything you may have ever seen!

A few off the top of my head...

-Pike Place Market -- make sure you go get hot, fresh cinnamon doughnuts from the stall around the corner from the fishmongers that throw the fish
-Take the underground tour in Pioneer Square
-Take in a Mariners or Seahawks game
-Take in the view from Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill
-Eat lots of seafood -- Anthony's, Dukes, and Chandlers are some local favorites
-Watch the boats and the salmon run at the Ballard Locks. Drink a NW micro-brew at the Lockspot Cafe and pretend you're one of the Deadliest Catch captains!
-Venture half hour east to the Cascade foothills and check out Snoqualmie Falls and go for a hike (Mt Si, Rattlesnake Ledge, Tiger Mountain)

In Portland I'd check out Powells Bookstore downtown if you are a reader. The place is so fricking big that they give you a map.

I'd also make it a point to stay one night at any of the McMenamins Hotels in the area; my vote would be Edgefield [http://www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=3]

Again, venturing a little ways has its benefits... You could check Timberline and Mt Hood and/or the Columbia River Gorge if you have the time.

And if you are driving south to San Fran, you'd be crazy not to check out the coast of Oregon on the way. Some real beautiful beaches down there. Most of the ones I've seen are in the north, ie the town of Cannon Beach and especially Ecola State Park.

    Have fun!

  • in west seattle, all around the perimiter is water, so makes a nice bike ride and awesome views of seattle skyline and olympic mountains. includes
lincoln Park, alki beach (bonfires and restaurants/bars). Husky deli ice cream is tasty (near easy street in west seattle).

If you are in the University district- lots of people like the fish tacos at agua verde and you can rent kayaks to explore lake union or lake washington.
