Its the 9th year of this decade and we are on the verge of getting our 4th studio album . . . I can't wait . . . but 4 albums in 9/10 years?

I understand the rock music scene is different nowadays and the band is older, what are your thoughts?

  • I believe this would be their 4th album this decade.

    Binaural-2000
    Riot Act-2002
    Avo-2006
    TBA-2009

Four albums in ten years sounds about right to me. Pretty good pace. They could be like AC/DC and release one album every eight years, now that would be brutal.
    MSG 7/8-7/9/03 -- Boston 9/28/04 -- Hartford 5/13/06 -- Boston 5/24-5/25/06 -- MSG 6/24-6/25/08 -- Hartford 6/27/08 -- Philly 10/31/09 -- Hartford 5/15/10 -- Boston 5/17/10

This one is coming out faster than the last one did.

The timing/gap between albums is perfect for me. As long as they continue to tour between in non-album years, I can deal with 3-4 year gaps between CDs, although 3 years is probably about right.

I think they will be about the same:

Riot Act to Pearl Jam: 3 years 6 months.

Pearl Jam to TBA: 3 years (3-6 months my guess)

It may even be a little bit longer.
    Writing checks that others pay.....

  • Well, at least the gap has allowed me to find a bunch of other artists that I'm a big fan of. Still, it is really painful to wait so long. I would say that it's not so bad since we got Into the Wild, but since that was such a short record it didn't really satiate my appetite.

You can't expect that a band that started its career almost 20 years ago will continue to release albums every 2 years or so, like they did in the 90s.

Don't get me wrong I love getting new albums by my favorite bands - but it cheapens the intense excitement that I get leading up to a new album if I get a new album every year or year and a half. How much less excited would we all be for the new album later this year if they had just released an album last summer?

Look at people like Beck and Ryan Adams - they have released a ton of albums since like 2004 or so I believe, that's great for their fans, but they can't really get that excited for a new album. I like to keep Pearl Jam on a cycle of releasing on album every 3 years or so...thats a good cycle, gives the band time to tour for the previous album (remember they have to do a massive world wide tour, so they are on the road for close to a year promoting their album) then it gives them time to chill out and relax, and it gives them time to write and put together a great album without being burned out.

Having said all of that - I would love - love - love to see them release a new Lost Dogs with rare "B" sides. This band has to have a ton of more unreleased stuff in their vault..its been going on 6 years since Lost Dogs was released. But I think its amazing how they give you the opportunity to get a copy of the concert you've just attended - that's remarkable and awesome.

it's true, PJ does not crank out record after record these days. in contrast with someone like Springsteen it seems as though they simply don't have the desire to record that much. no matter, i will wait and I KNOW that this next record will be SUPER FINE and 5 STARS!!

one thing is probably certain. HUGE tour next year, maybe even early 2010 like the Riot Act Tour!!
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

I think it takes time for the creativity bug to come around and bite them. I would rather them take their time and produce a quality album then rush and put out a crappy one just cause the fans want a new album now. Also, PJ are road dogs and probably don't write too much material on the road. After Avocado they toured for like 6 months, in 07 the went to Europe. After this summer's tour, they are finally hard at work. Can't wait.

  • I don't care if it takes 3 years in between albums, what I really want is an epic album every 3 years or so. Like 70ish minutes please. I mean, record the album, and then add 20 minutes of the members burping for all I care. I'll still listen to it :D Just hook us up with something like that, and it will hold us over for a very long time. What was "Pearl Jam"? Just under 50 minutes right? No wonder we're salivating at the thought of a new album!

I was thinking the EXACT thing today. The only difference is that I was impressed.

The first half of their career (1990-1999) They released 5 albums.
The second half of their career (2000-2010) They released 4 albums. (assuming its 2010)

Thats pretty damn good if you ask me. 10 years into their career and they still managed another 4 albums.

  • Let's face it, the band is getting older. And they've got families now. I don't really expect them to have the same output they did 1991-2000. And they haven't exactly been sitting on their hands during the down times, either. Multiple tours, side projects, solo albums, etc.

It took NIN like 6 years between The Fragile and With Teeth. I'm hoping at some point PJ will hit a creative streak like Trent has recently.

indeed, during the gap between albums, the non album tours have been a blessing . . .
